As the court cases between Disney, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District continue to drag on, a new court date has been set for a Motion for Summary Judgment from the Oversight District. This is the third time that the District has attempted to get its Motion heard after previously scheduling December 2023 and March 2024 dates. The new date for a hearing is currently set for July 25, 2024.
Disney has previously won continuances for Summary Judgment hearings after it argued that the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District unnecessarily dragged its feet in the Discovery process. Most recently, Disney filed a Motion for Continuance back in late January, asking the judge to push the March 12th hearing back six months.
As of publish time, there are no documents uploaded to the Orange County Clerk’s website to suggest that Disney won that continuance. Instead, it looks like the CFTOD pushed the hearing back on their own accord.
This particular court case is the state-level lawsuit brought by the District against Disney for contracts that the District alleges are null and void but that Disney maintains are proper. Recently, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that the District is ignoring the active contracts and operating as if they don’t exist.
Within the same lawsuit, Disney has countersued, alleging several Florida Constitutional violations, and other issues. This particular hearing is for a summary judgment on most of the allegations in Disney’s countersuit.
