Trash Cans Return to Disney World Ferryboats, Bolted Down Following Crash with Guest Injuries

|

Nearly three months after being removed, the trash cans and recycling cans have returned to the Magic Kingdom ferryboats. We noticed the return of the trash cans while riding the ferryboats last night. As you may remember, we brought you news of the trash can’s removal back in August. Since then, the trash cans have been missing from the ferryboats. Here’s the latest on their return, and why they were removed in the first place.

The removal of the trash cans was seemingly due to a late July incident where a ferryboat crashed into a dock, injuring dozens of guests. An incident report obtained by BlogMickey.com later revealed that 19 people were transported to area hospitals.

While not detailed in the incident report, there were reports from guests that a child was pinned or hit by a flying trash can during the crash. Just a few days after the incident, Walt Disney World removed all trash cans from the ferryboats that transport guests between the Transportation & Ticket Center and the Magic Kingdom main entrance.

Now, the trash cans have returned, and Disney has made some changes to ensure that they no longer become projectiles should another crash occur.

Here’s a look at the trash cans, now bolted down to ensure that they don’t go flying. From what we could tell, there are two pieces of metal, one on each side of the structural pole that the trash cans sit next to. The metal sheet appears to be secured to each trash can, but not necessarily attached to the pole.

It’s a pretty elegant solution, effectively allowing the trash cans to hug and hold onto each other around the pole. It doesn’t look like there is any attachment to the pole itself, but there’s no way that the trash cans can move at this point, given that there are 36 new anchor points total on the trash cans.
