As part of the ongoing refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, new pavement is now visible in front of the attraction. The construction walls have been pushed back, showcasing the new themed pavement at the attraction’s entrance. Here’s a look around, and a look back at what the pavement used to look like.

New Themed Pavement at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

We’ll start with a look back at the pavement in front of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad before the attraction closed for refurbishment. The pavement is mostly reddish concrete, with the occasional stone embedded in it.

Here’s a look at the new themed pavement. We first covered the new themed pavement in a photo update earlier this year, but that was on the other side of the construction walls. Now, we can get a closer look thanks to the shifting construction walls as crews prepare for a Spring opening timeframe.

The new pavement is similar to the “muddy” pavement seen elsewhere in Frontierland. The themed pavement at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad continues efforts to create more themed walkways, such as the work that took place in Adventureland more than a year ago.

Here’s a look at the current state of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad facade refresh work, which still includes scaffolding. It’s unclear when the attraction will reopen, but Disney’s latest statement is that the ride will reopen this Spring. That said, a new permit extends construction into late Summer.
