Universal Destinations & Experiences and the University of Central Florida (UCF) have announced a major new academic partnership, establishing the Universal School of Experience Leadership and Innovation at UCF’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. Backed by a $10 million investment from Universal, the new school is positioned to become a defining institution for the themed entertainment and immersive experience industries.

Universal & UCF Create New Themed Entertainment School

The Universal School of Experience Leadership and Innovation is a first-of-its-kind academic program designed to train the next generation of leaders in themed entertainment. The school is housed within UCF’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management, which holds the No. 1 global ranking in hospitality education.

Alongside the college’s existing School of Hospitality Leadership, the new program creates a dual-school model that combines creative, experience-focused education with business strategy, operations, and service leadership. The curriculum is built around the intersection of creativity, technology, and practical business application.

“The Universal School of Experience Leadership and Innovation unites creativity, technology and the practical application of business, marketing, and guest service to develop tomorrow’s leaders in themed entertainment and immersive experiences,” said Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences.

A New Hospitality Technology Lab

A key component of the partnership is the creation of a new Hospitality Technology Lab, which will serve as a hands-on research and innovation space for students, faculty, Universal professionals, and industry stakeholders. The lab is designed to function as a creative sandbox where real-world collaboration and applied research can take place side by side.

Research and coursework will focus on several forward-looking areas, including:

  • Service robotics and human-centered approaches to guest and employee interactions
  • Augmented reality and virtual reality simulation technologies for training, operations, and immersive environments
  • Artificial intelligence and digital twins for personalizing and optimizing the guest experience

Decades of Partnership Between UCF and Universal

The new school builds on more than 20 years of collaboration between UCF’s Rosen College and Universal Destinations & Experiences. Over that time, thousands of Rosen College graduates have contributed to Universal’s parks, experiences, and operations. The partnership has also included hands-on learning programs like the UCF/Universal Creative Lab.

“Together with UCF we have opened doors for students and helped strengthen our industry with valued talent, and the next chapter will be even better,” said John Sprouls, Chief Administrative Officer of Universal Destinations & Experiences. “We’re creating a distinctive academic home that will expand pathways into fulfilling and dynamic careers.”

Universal Becomes UCF’s First Entertainment-Sector Pegasus Partner

The announcement also marks Universal Destinations & Experiences becoming UCF’s first entertainment-sector Pegasus Partner, a designation that connects select industry leaders with the university for collaboration on research, talent development, strategic philanthropy, and more.

Universal is also the first Pegasus Partner to enter into a master research agreement with UCF, enabling scaled collaboration and opening new avenues for applied industry research. The partnership arrives during UCF’s Go For Launch campaign, a $3.5 billion initiative designed to accelerate the university’s next era of impact.

“UCF was built to power what’s next for our students, for industry, and for the State of Florida,” said UCF President Alexander N. Cartwright. “This collaboration with Universal Destinations & Experiences represents our mission at its best, creating an environment where students are learning in direct connection with the people and ideas shaping the future of immersive experiences.”

What This Means for the Themed Entertainment Industry

The Universal School of Experience Leadership and Innovation represents a significant investment in the future of themed entertainment education.

“Rosen College has long been the global leader in hospitality education, and this next step reflects how our industry is evolving,” said Cynthia Mejia, dean of UCF’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. “By strengthening our relationship with our longtime partners at Universal Destinations & Experiences, we are creating a first-of-its-kind two-school model that blends creativity, technology and leadership, preparing students to lead the future of guest experiences.”

For students interested in careers at theme parks, entertainment companies, and immersive experience venues, this new school represents a direct pipeline into one of the world’s most dynamic industries, backed by a $10 million commitment and the full weight of one of its most impactful brands.
