Comcast NBCUniversal has officially named its first European theme park: Universal United Kingdom Resort. The announcement came today alongside confirmation that construction is imminent on the 540-acre site in Bedford, roughly 45 minutes outside of London. The UK government and Comcast made simultaneous announcements, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves visiting the Bedford site this morning. She then hosted Comcast leadership at 11 Downing Street to unveil the name and logo. This is the brand’s first major destination in Europe.

THE NAME IS OFFICIAL

Universal United Kingdom Resort has been the working descriptor for this project since Comcast purchased land in Bedfordshire in 2023. Today’s announcements make it the park’s official name. The resort will feature a world-class theme park with several immersive themed lands, innovative attractions, and story-driven experiences. Also included: a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining, and entertainment complex.

Comcast Co-CEOs Brian Roberts and Mike Cavanagh issued a joint statement: “This is a proud moment for our company as we bring the first Universal theme park and resort to Europe. The United Kingdom is a highly attractive market and builds on the significant investments we’ve made elsewhere around the globe.”

Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, added that the resort reflects “that long-term strategy focused on key markets while continuing to enhance our existing parks and strengthen our position as a destination of choice for guests.”

UK GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTION

The UK government called this one of the largest investments ever made in the country’s tourism sector. Together, both sides have committed substantial capital. Comcast NBCUniversal is investing over £5 billion during an expected five-year construction window, plus an additional £1 billion in capital investment across the first 10 years of operation.

On its side, the government is contributing £1.3 billion toward regional and local infrastructure. That breaks down as a £400 million grant through the Regional Growth Fund, a £438 million Department for Culture, Media and Sport grant for community infrastructure, and £474 million from the Department for Transport for upgrades to the A421 road and Wixams station. Notably, those government grants are only paid once Universal completes the community infrastructure and officially opens the park.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the deal will “unlock nearly £50 billion of economic growth” and bring millions of additional visitors to the UK. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy described it as “a huge vote of confidence in the UK” and said it puts “rocket boosters under our entertainment industry.”

JOBS AND ECONOMIC IMPACT

The employment numbers are massive. Construction alone will create nearly 20,000 jobs. Beyond that, the park will support 8,000 permanent positions once open, with roughly 80% expected to come from Bedfordshire and surrounding regions.

Universal has already hired over 100 UK-based team members and received more than 33,000 expressions of employment interest. In addition, Universal is committing to apprenticeships and internships with local colleges and universities, connected to the government’s Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor initiative.

Overall, the project will generate nearly £50 billion in economic benefit for the UK by 2055. It also directly supports the government’s goal of growing UK creative industry investment from £17 billion to £31 billion by 2035.

WHERE THIS FITS IN THE UNIVERSAL PORTFOLIO

Universal United Kingdom Resort joins a significant run of expansion for Universal Destinations & Experiences. Most recently, Universal Epic Universe in Orlando completed its first year of operations with strong results, including 12 consecutive months of year-over-year growth in Orange County tourism tax revenue and an estimated $2 billion in economic impact for Florida.

Next up domestically, Universal Kids Resort opens July 1 in Frisco, Texas. It is the brand’s first park designed specifically for families with young children, featuring seven themed lands and a 300-room integrated hotel. Meanwhile, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, Universal Studios Hollywood’s first high-speed outdoor roller coaster, also opens this summer.

The UK resort is the next major international milestone. Planning permission was granted via a Special Development Order in December 2025 and came into force in January 2026. Enabling works are now underway on the Bedford site, and the park is targeted to open in 2031.

THE LOCATION

The site sits at Kempston Hardwick in Bedfordshire, on a 540-acre former brickworks parcel Comcast purchased in 2023. Fast rail links put it 45 minutes from London, and the government’s transport investments will further improve road and rail access across the region. More than 80% of England’s population lives within the site’s catchment area, and the park is projected to draw more than a million additional overseas visitors annually once open.
