Mayor Harry Sidhu of Anaheim has joined seven other big city mayors from California, calling on California Governor Gavin Newsom to modify the theme park reopening guidelines that he put out in October. Under the current guidelines, large theme parks such as Disneyland and Universal Studios would be able to reopen in the least restrictive yellow “minimal tier”. Orange County California health officials believe that Disneyland wouldn’t be able to reopen until summer 2021 under the guidelines, but the Big City Mayor’s Coalition is now saying that the theme parks could be closed for a year.
In a letter to Newsom, the mayors ask the governor to modify the theme park plans (via Deadline, in part):
The guidelines put forth by your Administration were released within the framework of prioritizing public health and safety for guests and employees. This is the right focus. However, economic and public health are not mutually exclusive goals. We are concerned that the state’s guidelines would push re-opening of large theme parks up to a year out, which would have significant negative impacts on hundreds of thousands of jobs, thousands of small businesses, and billions in operating revenue for our cities.
