There’s a recently added projection effect in the MuppetVision 3D show that continues the legacy of the show in extending the action beyond just the screen. Unlike a show like Mickey’s PhilharMagic, MuppetVision 3D not only has 3D effects but also extends the show beyond the screen. Similar to in-theater effects at the soon-to-disappear It’s Tough to be a Bug, MuppetVision 3D utilizes animatronics that blend the line between 3D and reality. MuppetVision 3D is unique in the use of a live character during the show as well.
The recently added projection effect occurs during a tour of the Muppet Labs where Beaker and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew show off their latest invention, a 3D character named Waldo. While trying to recall Waldo after a series of mishaps, the character is inflated and “explodes”, sending smaller versions of himself throughout the theater via a new projection effect. While trying to vacuum up the dozens of replicas, the muppets suck up the entire Muppets Lab before we head to the next scene.
Previously, lighting effects were used to simulate Waldo’s duplicates flying around the theater, but the new projection effects allow for a more detailed view of the effect. Here are our photos and video of the effect!
