Months After Deep Freeze, Disney World Continues Efforts to Save Trees

A new round of pruning appears to be underway at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as Walt Disney World’s horticulture team continues efforts to save trees affected by a deep freeze earlier this year. While walking around Disney’s Animal Kingdom today, we noticed some new pruning in the Asia section of the park. The pruning was most notable at a massive banyan tree in front of the Yak & Yeti Restaurant. Here’s a closer look.

Massive Banyan Tree Pruned Following Deep Freeze

First, here’s a look back at the tree when it was healthy prior to the deep freeze.

And here’s a look at the tree from our visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom earlier today. We’re hopeful that the efforts to extensively prune the tree will result in it being saved. It’s an iconic tree in this corner of the park, and one that would be a massive loss.

Nearby, other large trees have also recently been pruned as Disney’s Horticulture team presumably wants to encourage healthy growth for these mature trees.

While it’s not something that I’ve extensively covered here, the Horticulture team deserves high praise for their work managing the historic deep freeze. Their efforts included preparing the theme parks and resorts before the freeze, and a herculean effort following the freeze to manage and save foliage.
