D23 Entertainment Showcase Recap: Sneak Peeks at What’s Next From Marvel, Pixar, Disney

D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event opened Friday night in Anaheim with the Disney Entertainment Showcase at the Honda Center. The nearly three-hour presentation delivered new footage, casting news, and release dates from across film, television, and streaming. Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro opened the show before hosts Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan introduced segments from Marvel, Pixar, Disney Animation, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, and Disney Entertainment Television. Saturday night brings the parks-focused Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, the second major event of the weekend.

Marvel and Pixar Lead The Way

Marvel Studios’ portion of the night opened with a first look at “VisionQuest,” presented by Paul Bettany and James Spader. The new Disney+ series arrives October 14th. It closes out the trilogy started by “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along.” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige joined the pair to introduce the trailer. The footage follows a rebooted Vision. He investigates a mysterious boy who may be his son.

Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell joined Feige for the panel’s biggest moment, new footage from “Avengers: Doomsday,” out December 18th. Disney also released a new poster for the film Friday. Tickets are on sale now through Fandango. Feige then brought out Sadie Sink, who debuts as Jean Grey in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Director Jake Schreier joined her to announce a new X-Men film. In casting news, Kit Connor plays Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott plays Professor Charles Xavier, and Samara Weaving plays Emma Frost. Inde Navarrette plays Rogue, and Maya Boyd plays Storm. Adam Driver confirmed via video message that he will play Nathaniel Milbury. The untitled film opens May 5, 2028.

Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter led the studio’s segment with an exclusive first look at “Incredibles 3.” Peter Sohn directs the film. It arrives June 16, 2028. Docter then turned to “Coco 2,” bringing out Benjamin Bratt to confirm a twist. Ernesto de la Cruz, the villain from the original film, returns. His comeback pulls Miguel back to the Land of the Dead. The sequel reunites director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina from the first film. “Coco 2” arrives in November 2029.

Docter also announced a new original film titled “Ghost Market.” The story is set at a plate lunch shop on Oʻahu’s North Shore. The shop serves spirits caught between life and death, and the film opens in March 2028. Pixar closed its segment with a look at “Gatto,” an animated film about a cat navigating Venice’s criminal underworld. “Gatto” releases March 5, 2027.

Disney Animation and Lucasfilm Reveal New Details

Walt Disney Animation Studios confirmed that “Zootopia 3” is officially in early development. Studio Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush joined Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan for an exclusive sequence from the film. Bush also revealed a new original feature called “Clay.” Kieran Culkin stars in the film, set in a magical forest. “Clay” releases in 2028.

The studio’s November 25th release “Hexed” picked up two major cast additions. Walton Goggins joins as a three eyed cat named Beef Roger Crummchuk. Jodie Foster will voice the film’s antagonist, Queen Celeste. The night closed with “Frozen 3” cast members Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, and Josh Gad performing new songs. Disney then unveiled new animation from the film. The footage hints at a villain whose powers rival Elsa’s. “Frozen 3” opens November 24, 2027.

Lucasfilm President and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni debuted the season two teaser for “Ahsoka.” Stars Rosario Dawson, Hayden Christensen, and Eman Esfandi joined him. The new season premieres January 20, 2027. It picks up after the fall of the Empire as Ahsoka and Sabine Wren face Grand Admiral Thrawn. Director Shawn Levy then brought out Ryan Gosling to preview “Star Wars: Starfighter,” opening May 28, 2027. Gosling walked on stage wearing a Mickey Mouse Club jacket referencing his time as a Mouseketeer. Levy then presented him with a jacket tied to a symbol from the film.

Anne Hathaway will be honored as a Disney Legend this weekend. She spoke about her history with Disney, dating back to “The Princess Diaries.” Maia Kealoha plays Lilo in the live-action “Lilo & Stitch.” She introduced a look ahead to “Lilo & Stitch 2.” Production begins in Hawaiʻi later this year. The film opens in theaters May 26, 2028.

Disney Entertainment Television’s portion of the night included a season three teaser for “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” It arrives on Disney+ November 20th. An anime series inspired by Kingdom Hearts has also been greenlit for Disney Channel and Disney+. The series is developed in partnership with video game creator Tetsuya Nomura. National Geographic debuted a trailer for “Lion,” a docuseries premiering August 19th on the network. “Lion” streams the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.

Disney Theatrical Group announced that its stage adaptation of “The Greatest Showman” will open at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London’s West End in spring 2027. The announcement follows a sold-out run at The Bristol Hippodrome earlier this year.

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, reprising their roles as Romy and Michele, entered the stage to a shower of yellow Post-it notes to talk about “Romy & Michele 2.” Tim Federle, the screenwriter of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” directs the sequel to the beloved 1997 film. The cast also includes Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim, Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Janeane Garofalo. “Romy & Michele 2” debuts exclusively on Hulu in 2027.

Camp Rock 3 executive producers and stars Joe, Nick, and Kevin Jonas took to the stage to introduce a powerhouse musical performance of “One Beat Away” and “We Rock” performed by next generation stars Liamani Segura, Malachi Barton, Hudson Stone, Lumi Pollack, and Casey Trotter. Camp Rock 3 is now streaming on Disney+.

Disney debuted a new teaser trailer and poster for “The Bluey Movie,” complete with a surprise game of Keepy Uppy featuring giant versions of the show’s iconic red balloons. The teaser offers a first look at the CG-animated film based on the series about Bluey, an inexhaustible blue heeler who lives with her Mum, Dad, and little sister, Bingo. The story follows an action-packed day when a big surprise changes everything for Bluey and her family. Creator Joe Brumm writes and directs, with Amber Naismith producing and Richard Jeffery co-directing. Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack return to voice Mum and Dad. “The Bluey Movie” arrives in theaters August 6, 2027.

Queen Latifah and Denis Leary took the stage to introduce an exclusive in-room clip for “Ice Age: Boiling Point.” The footage featured Scrat and Baby Scrat alongside a new addition, their massive prehistoric cousin, Jurassic Scrat. The dinosaur and lava filled adventure sends Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Buck, and the rest of the herd into never-before-seen corners of the Lost World. Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, and Simon Pegg return to voice the core cast. John C. Donkin directs, and Lori Forte produces. “Ice Age: Boiling Point” opens exclusively in theaters February 5, 2027.
