As part of updated information about a Cars-themed expansion of Frontierland, Walt Disney World is still remaining secretive about a second attraction planned for the area. Media was treated to an advance preview of today’s news, and Walt Disney World reportedly held back information about a “family fun” attraction planned for the area. In fact, the attraction doesn’t even appear on the updated map/concept plans for the area. Here’s what we know.
Secretive “Family Fun” Attraction Planned for Magic Kingdom
Ever since the August 2024 announcement that Cars-themed attractions were planned for Magic Kingdom, we’ve known that there would be two attractions. The most publicized of the attractions is a “thrilling rally race” that takes guests through the mountainous areas of the newly named Piston Peak National Park. The second attraction is described as an attraction geared toward smaller racers – something that is fun for the whole family.
But what does this other attraction look like? What kind of ride is it? All of the attraction concept art released so far has been for the rally race attraction. Walt Disney World is yet to show off this second ride. In fact, they have left it blank on the latest “fun map”, but more on that in a second.
If we pull up the old concept art to analyze every pixel, we can see what appears to be a second attraction in the Cars-themed expansion to Magic Kingdom. I’m not even sure I’m comfortable guessing what it was planned to be.
Honestly, I’m not even sure what to do with the “old” concept art. Is it outdated now that Disney has released a new “fun map” with a restructured layout? Is it still in play as the only “concept art” released by Disney? Who knows?
All that said, I think it’s clear that plans have changed since August, but how much have they changed?
While the latest update probably isn’t exactly concept art, it’s the best we have at this point. According to Scott Gustin, this is the area where the “family fun” attraction will be located. Gustin says that the Ranger Headquarters building seen in the art below will be the queue for the attraction. As for the ride itself, Disney isn’t ready or willing to say what it will be.
In fact, there isn’t anything there. A patch of grass surrounded by a fence is the extent that Disney is willing to disclose at this point. Of course, that begs the question: is this ride a secret because it’s great or boring? Being a “family fun” attraction, we imagine that means that there will be no height requirement. If that’s the case, Disney is a worldwide leader in no-height-requirement rides, which is encouraging.
That said, the space is not large at all. If we look at existing Cars-themed attractions for inspiration, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters does a lot with a small space, so that could be a contender. It’s also possible that a simple Dumbo-style spinner ride might do the trick. Only time will tell.
