Set Installation Permit Extended Into Summer 2027 for Indiana Jones Ride at Animal Kingdom

Walt Disney Imagineering has extended its set installation permit for the Indiana Jones attraction taking over the former DINOSAUR ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The amended Notice of Commencement, filed this morning, keeps the same scope, owner, and contractor as the original notice recorded last August. That original filing was set to expire in early August under the standard one-year term. So the timing points to Imagineering keeping the paperwork current rather than embarking on a new scope of work. Here’s the latest.

  • Imagineering extended a permit for the retheme of the former DINOSAUR attraction
  • We’re tracking every step of the DINOSAUR transformation, from the first permit to vertical steel to a patent hinting at a never-before-seen effect.

The filing is an amended Notice of Commencement, updating the original notice recorded in August 2025. The original Notice of Commencement was set to expire one year from its recording date. Amending it now keeps the set installation work covered without a gap. Imagineering did the same thing next door, extending the Encanto ride’s permit this past May. The takeaway is that set element installation on the Indiana Jones ride is still ongoing. The work will continue into 2027, and this new permit allows for work through next Summer.

The scope, owner, and contractor all carry over unchanged from that first filing. The permit names Walt Disney Imagineering as the owner, with Mecca Productions as the contractor. The scope of work is set element installation. Imagineering appearing as the owner points to theming work rather than base building construction. That tracks with the retheme’s current phase. Steel framing for the new Maya temple exterior went vertical earlier this year, and attention has increasingly turned to what’s going on inside the building.

Mecca Productions Returns as Contractor

The contractor on the permit is Mecca Productions, the same firm named on the original August 2025 notice. It’s a familiar name on Imagineering set installation filings. Mecca has shown up across several recent Imagineering set installation permits beyond this one. That includes work tied to the Encanto ride also planned for Tropical Americas. Other recent work includes the Haunted Mansion, and the Muppets Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

As with previous filings, the permit doesn’t name the Indiana Jones ride directly. That said, the address ties it to the DINOSAUR building.

What to Expect From the Indiana Jones Ride

The retheme reuses the DINOSAUR ride’s existing motion-vehicle system. The attraction will deliver a fast, thrilling experience rather than a slow-moving dark ride. Imagineering has said the ride will send Indy into a preserved Maya temple, with a storyline unique among Indiana Jones attractions worldwide.

Some of the clearest detail on the attraction’s direction came from a Walt Disney Imagineering presentation at the Maya at the Mouse conference earlier this year, where creative director Brianna Pfost walked through the team’s research and thematic approach. Pfost said that the attraction premise is inspired by real Mayan mythology. Pfost said that there is folklore related to the Maya god Chaac (the god of rain, thunder, and lightning). In fact, the temple at the entrance to the attraction is dedicated to the god Chaac. Pfost said that the guiding idea is “everything is alive,” playing on the duality of nature as something both beautiful and dangerous.

The Indiana Jones ride is one of several attractions coming to Tropical Americas, the land replacing DinoLand USA at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, alongside an Encanto attraction, an animal-themed carousel, a quick-service restaurant, and a meet and greet.
