New Disney Permit Suggests Plans Are Moving Ahead for Major Animal Kingdom Construction Project

It looks like daydreams may become a reality as Walt Disney World has filed a permit that signals that they’re preparing for a major construction project at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the DinoLand USA reimagining into a Tropical Americas-themed land as seen in the concept art below. There have also been rumors of further development in Disney’s Animal Kingdom that has yet to be announced.

The permit filed by Disney reveals back-of-house improvements in a laydown yard that has previously been utilized for major projects. Most recently, this laydown yard was one of a handful for the Pandora – The World of Avatar. The laydown yard is located north of Kali River Rapids along a perimeter road that runs past DinoLand USA and Expedition Everest. It also connects to a roadway, Western Way, that has direct access to area highways.

Here’s a look at a relevant screenshot from the permit, which shows the planned parking lot for four WDI trailers and a third-party contractor trailer. These type of trailers are typically used for projects that will require a constant and significant presence of workers. We saw a similar setup for the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind project at EPCOT.

Here’s a wider look (below) at the project area. It will also, interestingly, be located very closely to Rafiki’s Planet Watch and Conservation Station, which has also been an area that rumors have persisted about. There will be an access road to the Conservation Station area. To the south, we can see some back-of-house infrastructure for Kali River Rapids, and further south is Expedition Everest and DinoLand USA. A sidewalk will be constructed to the Expedition Everest attraction area.

While the permit certainly signals a large-scale project is in the works for Disney’s Animal Kingdom, it doesn’t give any hints as to what project it is for. Publically, Disney has announced plans for the DinoLand USA reimagining and a retheme of the “It’s Tough to Be A Bug” show into a Zootopia-themed show (concept art below).

The WDI presence would certainly signal something far more expansive than the Zootopia retheme of “It’s Tough to Be A Bug”, but it remains to be seen if this is for the previously announced DinoLand USA reimagining, or something yet to be announced.

There are two big dates where we could hear more about the DinoLand USA reimagining. First, Disney is holding the Annual Meeting of Shareholders on April 3rd. Another event to circle in your calendar is the D23 Expo this August.

    1. I’m hopeful as a long time fan of disney that they will revamp or retirement outdated opening date attractions like Tomorrowland Speedway at Magic Kingdom, Orlando FL to like a Cars retheme.
