Palm Trees Return to EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth Entrance Plaza with New Look

Disney has planted new palm trees on either side of Spaceship Earth at EPCOT. The spot has famously had palm trees here for years, but had a more mixed recent history. Most recently, foxtail palms were removed following a cold snap earlier this year. Now, palms are back, but they certainly look different. Here’s a look at the newly planted palm trees!

Palm Trees Return to EPCOT Entrance Near Spaceship Earth

  • New palm trees have been planted on either side of Spaceship Earth
  • The trees appear to be date palms, a departure from the previous style of palm tree

We stopped by EPCOT this morning and found new palm trees planted near Spaceship Earth. They sit in the planters that flank Spaceship Earth, next to the main walkway that leads into the park. The palm trees appear to be date palms, which is a new look for the entrance plaza. This variety is recognizable by its thick trunk, covered in a diamond-shaped pattern of old leaf scars. Long, feathered green fronds top each trunk. The new palms frame the base of the iconic geodesic sphere.

The new palms fill a spot that had been empty for several weeks after the previous palms were removed. The new date palms replace the old foxtail palms, seen in the photo below, taken earlier this year.

A Familiar Look For The Entrance

Palm trees have long framed the sides of the walkway leading under to Spaceship Earth. That said, they have a more recent mixed history. Following the EPCOT entrance reimagining, Disney has experimented with different trees in front of Spaceship Earth. Disney fans have been vocal in their desire to see palm trees return to a more prominent role framing Spaceship Earth itself.

With new palms now in place, we hope that Disney has committed itself to palm trees in this space. The EPCOT entrance plaza as a whole has recently undergone a bit of a landscaping update, with the trees removed from the central planter not too long ago. These new date palms are the latest change, and more changes look to be coming shortly!

Story So Far

  • Weeks ago, Disney removed the palm trees previously flanking Spaceship Earth
  • Disney has now planted new palm trees in that same area, but changed to date palms instead of foxtail palms
