In addition to new colors for various “neighborhoods” at EPCOT, a new style of trash can is emerging. As you can see in the photos below, new trash cans have been installed that do not have the typical flap that would be used to contain trash and smell, while keeping insects out. At this point, only a handful of the trash cans installed use this new flap-less style, but Disney may roll this out to more trash cans in the future.
Here’s a look at the flap-less trash cans installed at EPCOT.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney propped all trash can lids open to allow for the contactless disposal of trash, but the lids were lowered again earlier this year. It’s unclear what Disney’s goal with these new trash cans style might be given typical benefits of lids.
Of course, with EPCOT in a nearly perpetual state of “Festival”, it’s possible that these cans simply might be installed for ease of disposal when considering the high volume of discarded food and drink containers during a normal Festival day.
