Following the installation of steel a couple of weeks ago, Disney has begun to install the rebar “chips” that will create the shape of rockwork for the upcoming Journey of Water – Inspired by Moana attraction at EPCOT.
This evening, we took a ride along the EPCOT monorail to get a look at the work taking place.
First, here’s a look at a concrete structure to the north of the area where rockwork installation has begun. At this site, you can see various pipes and gauges for the upcoming water walkthrough attraction.
Turning our attention to the star of the show, we can see that rockwork “chips” have been installed on the existing steel frames. Essentially, these rebar forms are prefabricated and simply installed once they get to the site. By prefabricating the “chips”, installation can go quicker and be more precise than if they were shaped by hand on-site. This construction technique was actually patented by Disney. Once the chips are installed, theming will be applied to the shaped rebar.
Here’s a look across the construction site at another structure that will likely receive rebar chips soon.
Disney has not set an opening date for Journey of Water – Inspired by Moana but has previously said that all work will be completed in 2023.
