A new loose article policy went into effect at Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom this month, and we stopped by Magic Kingdom earlier today to take a look. Signage outside of the attraction informs guests about the loose article policy. Here’s a look:
Hand-held or loose articles, including cell phones and cameras, are not permitted while riding. Items must be secured on the person, in vehicle storage pouch, or left with a non-rider.
When we stopped by, we asked Cast Members about the policy, and about concerns that readers have shared with us that this means that there is no more filming allowed on the attraction. Cast Members were very clear that filming is still allowed, but that the recording device must be secured to the person, as noted on the sign. An example given was a GoPro strapped to the chest of a guest. In that scenario, the GoPro would not be considered a loose item. There is no policy in place that filming is not allowed on Space Mountain.
That said, a person simply holding a cell phone would be in violation of the loose article policy and would be asked to put the cell phone away. Another example that was given to us was that sunglasses would need to be stored because they are a loose article, but if glasses had a strap that secured them to the guests head, it would be ok.
The policy is unique to Space Mountain and Cast Members expressed that there was an increasing concern of guests not being able to hold onto loose items due to the nature of how dark it is inside the ride, and how unpredictable and sharp the turns were. Of course, the ride is stacked where portions of the track pass over other parts of the track, so a dropped loose item would be a safety concern. No other attractions have implemented a loose article policy, but we anticipate that a similar policy to be put in place for TRON Lightcycle Run. That said, specifics for TRON have not been announced.
