While visiting EPCOT recently, we noticed that there is some new movement on the Mission: SPACE refurbishment. While the repainting of Mars approaches its 1-year anniversary, there is a new tarp covering a portion of the recently refurbished Earth, and the themed pavement is deteriorating. Here’s a closer look.
Mission: SPACE Refurbishment Drags On
It’s hard to believe, but the Mission: SPACE exterior refurbishment began all the way back in May 2023. The first stage of the project focused on a refurbishment of the pavement in the “Planetary Plaza” entrance for the attraction, culminating in a refreshed version of the Mars rover tracks in October 2023.
In August 2023, Earth was removed from the main entrance to the attraction as work on the planets and moon began. By November 2023, the moon was refreshed and Jupiter was behind scrims. In early 2024, the Mission: SPACE attraction sign was removed for refurbishment. In February 2024, a refreshed Jupiter was revealed.
By March 2024, two significant milestones were reached with the return of planet Earth and the attraction signage. The very next month, work began on refreshing the sun-damaged panels of Mars. Throughout 2024, the refurbishment of Mars dragged on, and interest in the project waned. In August 2024, Disney got Earth to rotate again for a short while before it broke.
Now, we return to find that not only is the Earth partially covered by a scrim, but work continues to drag on Mars, and the pavement that debuted in August 2023 is starting to deteriorate. Here’s the latest update on the lengthy Mission: SPACE refurbishment saga.
And here’s a look at the deteriorating themed pavement. In some places, the broken pavement was enough of a tripping hazard for Disney to just throw some unthemed concrete into the spaces where the themed elements had broken off.
Here’s a look back at what the themed pavement is supposed to look like.
