Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Closes for Its First Major Refurbishment

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is now closed at Magic Kingdom for its first major refurbishment since opening in 2024. The good news for holiday travelers is that the ride is scheduled to return December 18th, ahead of Christmas week. Long breaks like this one are nothing new for Disney World’s water rides, and its predecessor had one almost every winter. Here’s the latest.

IN THIS ARTICLE:

  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is closed for refurbishment and scheduled to reopen December 18th
  • This is the ride’s first major refurbishment since it opened in June 2024
  • Annual refurbishments have long been routine for Disney World water rides like Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids

The bayou is taking a breather. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure hadn’t had an extended closure since opening more than two years ago. Now Disney World has taken it offline for a few weeks of work before the holiday rush.

Sunday, November 1st was the final day to ride before the closure, which began this morning. Disney calls it a “routine refurbishment,” and Walt Disney World’s refurbishment calendar shows the ride reopening Friday, December 18th. That works out to roughly six and a half weeks of downtime, so the ride stays closed through Thanksgiving week.

The December 18th date looks solid, too. Disney’s website lists operating hours for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure on reopening day, from 9:00am to 6:00pm, with no hours listed for December 17th. Day guests should plan around that 6:00pm cutoff, since December 18th is also a Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party night.

Tiana’s Bayou General, the gift shop at the ride’s exit, is closed alongside the attraction. Critter Co-Op stays open during the refurbishment, so guests can still pick up Tiana merchandise in Frontierland.

First Major Refurbishment Since 2024 Opening

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opened on June 28th, 2024, replacing Splash Mountain in the same Frontierland show building and flume. This is the first-ever refurbishment for the ride, which skipped the kind of winter maintenance window its predecessor took most years.

Timing likely played a role in that. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad spent more than a year closed before reopening this past May. Taking both Frontierland mountains offline at once would have left the land short on headliners and put strain on other attractions at Magic Kingdom. With Big Thunder back in action, Disney now has room to give the bayou some attention.

Disney hasn’t detailed the scope of the work. Still, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has dealt with its share of Audio-Animatronic and effects issues since opening. A dedicated maintenance window is the best chance to get everything back to full strength. We’re hoping Tiana, Louis, and the critter band all come back in top form for the holidays.

Annual Refurbishments Are a Disney World Water Ride Tradition

Water rides at Disney World close for maintenance far more often than most attractions. Disney usually schedules that work during the cooler months, when fewer guests want to get soaked and wait times drop. Splash Mountain followed that pattern for most of its three decades in Frontierland, typically closing in January after the holiday crowds cleared out.

The details changed from year to year. Splash Mountain closed in the fall of 2017 for work that included repainting most of the facade, then closed again from January 8th to February 1st, 2018. In early 2020, the ride shut down from January 6th through February 27th, and we spotted crews resculpting rockwork near the main drop and replacing shingles during that window. The ride’s last annual refurbishment came in 2022, when it closed January 10th. It then missed its scheduled reopening morning on February 11th before finally welcoming guests back that evening.

Kali River Rapids at Disney’s Animal Kingdom follows a similar rhythm. The rafting ride usually closes in January for a multi-month refurbishment, and some of those closures have stretched well past their original end dates. In 2021, Disney extended the refurbishment to April 1st after originally planning to wrap up February 17th. Its 2024 return didn’t go smoothly either, with the ride briefly reopening before two evacuations sent it back to maintenance on day one.

Kali River Rapids also offers a recent example of Disney shifting the usual refurbishment cadence. After its early 2025 refurbishment, the ride closed again on October 6th, 2025, for an earlier-than-normal refurbishment that brought it back in mid-December. That schedule had the rafts back in the water well before DinoLand USA closed on February 2nd. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is following a similar fall-to-December window this year, with the bayou set to return in time for Christmas week.

Why Now?

It’s that “early” closure of Kali River Rapids that has caught our eye when it comes to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. I’m not sure that the attraction is in need of an accelerated closure instead of waiting until January. I would imagine that Disney would prefer to have Tiana’s Bayou Adventure open for Thanksgiving crowds. That said, what if Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is closing early to accommodate another Magic Kingdom closure in early 2027?

While chatter has died down a bit following the August D23 Expo, we believe that there is still some extended work planned for Space Mountain. An extended closure of Space Mountain starting in early 2027 would be a big enough capacity ripple to prompt Disney to accelerate a refurbishment for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. This would be the exact same blueprint that Kali River Rapids followed ahead of the closure of the DINOSAUR attraction.

Walt Disney World has not announced any closures or reimagining plans for Space Mountain, so that part of this article should be considered a rumor. As of right now, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is closed for refurbishment, and we hope that it receives some much-needed care.
