Walt Disney World Highlights Features & New Designs of Solar-Powered Smart Trash Cans

Walt Disney World has shared a new video detailing the features of its solar-powered trash cans. The video walks through the compacting technology, solar charging, and theming behind the redesign. The video even showcases some designs that haven’t debuted in the parks yet. It arrives as the cans keep expanding beyond EPCOT and into Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom.

Disney Details Solar Trash Can Features in New Video

IN THIS ARTICLE:

  • A look at the new video shared by Walt Disney World
  • How the video aligns with what we’ve already reported

What the New Video Shows

The video opens by calling the classic Walt Disney World trash can “iconic, dependable, beloved by fans around the world.” It then introduces the redesigned version. According to the video, the new cans are “powered by the sun.” They “can even be plugged in too,” confirming a backup power option alongside the solar panel. We first noted the solar panel feature when the cans debuted at the Germany Pavilion.

The video also touts automatic compaction. According to the narration, the bins “compact waste automatically” and “hold significantly more” trash than the units they replace. That matches the fivefold compaction increase we have previously written about.

Cast Members are the video’s central focus. The narration frames the redesign as freeing custodial Cast Members to “focus on what matters most”, while showing them performing other parts of their job such as keeping walkways clear of waste. Sensors alert the custodial team when a can needs emptying, cutting out the need for manual checks.

Disney also leans into the design work behind the cans. The video jokes that the bins “might become your new favorite photo spot.” It calls them “practically perfect” in “looking and having the theming we have all grown to love.” That points to the park-specific theming Imagineering has applied as the rollout has continued. We spotted a Tree of Life decal on the new cans at Animal Kingdom and a distinct design at EPCOT’s France Pavilion.

The video closes by confirming the cans are “appearing soon across Walt Disney World.” It does not offer a specific timeline for when the rollout will reach every remaining location.

We’ve uploaded our own video of how to use the new solar-powered smart trash cans as well.

How This Fits the Rollout So Far

Disney’s new video recaps features we have documented as the rollout has expanded. The video’s framing around Cast Member workflow lines up with what we learned when it was first confirmed that the trash cans would be expanding across the parks and beyond. Walt Disney Imagineering’s design work has already shown up in the field. World Showcase medallions, land-specific decals, and other touches keep the new cans consistent with the old ones.
