Disney Modifies Red Kyber Crystal Canisters to Prevent “Black Kyber Crystal Hack” in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge

While visiting Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities today, we purchased a red Kyber Crystal and found that Disney has modified the canister packaging recently. In the past, it wasn’t uncommon to watch guests hold the canisters up to a light source to try and get a glimpse into the moderately transparent packaging. There are more than a few discussions online about how one could see into the canister and notice a difference in Kyber Crystal coloring to try and find the rare black Kyber Crystal.

Of course, Disney quickly noticed the guest behavior and stationed a Cast Member near the display to “answer any questions you might have” while keeping an eye out for those who might be trying to use the black Kyber Crystal hack. Cast Members we spoke with said that they have escorted travelers “off planet” (aka out of Batuu) a couple of times already for trying to get a peek inside the canisters. A cursory glance on eBay shows that the black Kyber Crystals have sold for anywhere from $200 all the way up to a whopping $1675 back in July! Of course, Disney is only asking $14.99 for any single Kyber Crystal, making the black Kyber Crystal one of the highest margin items in the Disney reseller/personal shopper community. All you had to do was invest a little bit of time searching the canisters with the backlight hack and hope Cast Members didn’t catch you…until today.

As you can see in the photos below, the red Kyber Crystal canister now comes with an opaque black piece of paper that prevents any sort of “black Kyber Crystal hack”.

We’ve also purchased other color Kyber Crystals recently to fill out our collection and noticed that those canisters don’t contain the black piece of paper because there is no chance that a black Kyber Crystal will be found in one.

We noticed this change at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but have been told that the change will be coming to Disneyland soon, if it hasn’t been implemented already.

    1. These Kyber Crystals with the black insert are second edition Kyber Crystal’s. You can tell because the first edition tubes came with black writing on the outside while these come with the write. Also the first edition ones had a typo on the back. I was lucky enough to get a first and second edition black crystal on my last two trips to Disneyland.

      • Technically it’s 3rd edition.

1st edition had a type “THE THE FORCE”.
2nd edition fixed the typo but was still transparent.
3rd edition added the black paper.

    2. Disney has become so petty In last few months! Really why can’t you just let people buy the color they want? And has anyone noticed, Walmart no longer sells Star Wars anything!!!! Why we used to go there and see what they had and now there is no area for any of it. We asked someone and they didn’t know, hmmmmm.

    3. @Gina. I dont blame disney at all for this. its greedy assholes not giving other people a fair shot at this cool merchandise.

    4. Why the Hell would I want their kyber crystal and spend money finding the black crystal on top of a $200 lightsaber, when the total money I spend with Disney could have been better spent on a super staff stunt saber from Ultrasaber? I can even change colors of my blades at the convenience of my computer without hunting down plastic crystals!
