CDC Approves COVID-19 Vaccine for Children as Young as 5 Years Old

CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, M.D., M.P.H., endorsed the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation that children 5 to 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine. CDC now expands vaccine recommendations to about 28 million children in the United States in this age group and allows providers to begin vaccinating them as soon as possible.

The approval from the CDC and ACIP is a significant step in getting children vaccinated against COVID-19 and further advances a return to normal for Americans.

The approval is particularly good news for theme park operators like Walt Disney World, which welcomes families from around the world. By making the vaccine available to children as young as 5 years old, a significant portion of Walt Disney World clientele now have the option to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek previously called the availability of a COVID-19 a “game-changer” as it relates to their operations. Before the widespread availability of a COVID-19 vaccine earlier this year, Chapek said that Disney planned on keeping physical distancing and mandatory masks in place through the end of 2021.

Instead, Disney actually fully removed the mask mandate for fully vaccinated guests back in June before reintroducing an indoor mask mandate due to a surge in Delta variant cases about 45 days later.

When you combine declining COVID-19 cases with this new vaccine availability for young children, it’s starting to look like we might see the end of the indoor mask mandate in the next month or so.
