According to a report from the Orlando Sentinel, Freddy Figgers of Figgers Communication has requested that the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District open bidding on a contract that was previously awarded to them in a no-bid situation. Figgers is on the Florida Commission on Ethics, which raised questions of inside dealing given that his company was awarded a no-bid contract by the District currently run by the former Chair of the Florida Commission on Ethics, Glen Gilzean.
The contract was part of a $1 million project to update the District’s 911 system as the District looked to move off of the Walt Disney World internet infrastructure. The portion of the project awarded in the no-bid contract was just over $240,000.
According to the report, the District was fine moving forward with the no-bid contract, but Figgers requested to open the contract to outside bids following questions about the nature of the contract and the no-bid atmosphere under which it was awarded.
A Board of Supervisors meeting was canceled after news broke of the no-bid contract. The contract will now be opened to competitive bidding.
