Purple Martins Return to Walt Disney World

Guests visiting Walt Disney World will likely start to notice the return of Purple Martins as they make their way back to the United States following a winter in South America. In fact, the migratory birds returned in modest numbers last month, but we’re starting to notice an increase in activity at the numerous housing structures around Walt Disney World. While visiting EPCOT recently, we noticed that Cast Members from Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team were monitoring the birds.

Purple Martins Arrive at Walt Disney World

For a deeper dive into Purple Martins, and the efforts of the Walt Disney World animal care team monitoring them, check out our article from last year detailing their efforts. This year, the Purple Martins will return as a feature of the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival, which begins March 5th.

Here’s a look at the activity from a recent visit to EPCOT. Cast Members were on hand, recording data from the activity that they observed. We’re told that the Purple Martins are beginning to choose mates and prepare their nests. The Purple Martins will stay here into August before flying back to South America for the winter months.

Here’s a closer look at the Purple Martins we spotted, including one that has a tracker for Disney and other organizations to collect data about migratory patterns!
