With Labor Day just around the corner, travel website TripIt released some data about how Americans are traveling. The data backs up the article we wrote earlier about how popular Disney World will be this weekend.
According to the article, Florida this year is claiming the lion’s share (plurality) of Labor Day flight reservations, with 12 percent of all plans including a destination in the Sunshine State. In 2019, Florida’s share of Labor Day Weekend flight reservations was 4 percent, representing a 200 percent year-over-year increase. Orlando jumped from 14th on the list in 2019, to 3rd place in 2020, behind Las Vegas and Denver.
While flight data is interesting, there are still a lot of consumers who are opting to drive to their Labor Day destination, which makes the hotel bookings stat about the Disney World area absolutely mind-blowing. The Disney World area has grabbed 4 out of the top 5 destination cities in the entire United States.
According to the chart below, Orlando dethroned New York City for the top spot when compared to 2019, Lake Buena Vista took over Chicago’s spot at #2, Bay Lake took over Orlando’s 2019 spot at #4, and Kissimmee replaced Boston at #5. In 2019, 3 of the 4 Disney World area destinations didn’t even crack the top 10.
Combining this data with our earlier analysis can only mean one thing – Disney World is going to see a very busy Labor Day weekend. While it won’t compare to years past due to COVID-19 capacity limitations in place at the parks, it will be the busiest weekend Disney World has faced since the parks reopened in mid-July.
The data was comprised by analyzing the top 100 destination cities for US-origin roundtrip flight and US hotel reservations made from Jan 1 – Jul 30, 2020, with a travel date between Sep 4 – 8, 2020, and compared that to an equivalent booking and travel window in 2019.
