In this installment of our Disney Genie FAQ series of articles, we’ll answer the question: When can I make Disney Genie+ attraction selections? This article will cover the concept of Disney Genie+ redemption events.
Disney Genie+ First Selection Time
All guests, regardless of on-site/off-site status or what hotel you’re staying in, will be able to make their first Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane attraction selection at 7am on the day of their visit.
As of early 2024, you must enroll and purchase Disney Genie+ on the day of your visit, and you can do so beginning at midnight or anytime throughout the day.
Disney Genie+ Next Attraction Selection / Redemption Events
After guests make their first attraction selection, the next question is: when can you book your next Disney Genie+ attraction? In our articles about Genie+, we typically call these redemption events.
Unlike FastPass+ of yesteryear, you currently cannot select more than one Genie+ Lightning Lane at a time. That’s not to say you can’t hold more than one Genie+ Lightning Lane at a time – you can, and that’s the basis of Genie+ stacking, but you can’t make more than one Genie+ selection at a time.
That said, you will be eligible to make a new Genie+ Lightning Lane selection when a redemption event occurs. Here’s how Disney World describes the redemption events:
Disney Genie+ service Lightning Lane selections can only be made one at a time. You must redeem an existing Disney Genie+ service Lightning Lane selection or wait 2 hours—whichever comes first—before making another Lightning Lane entrance selection through Disney Genie+ service. Please note: the 2-hour wait to make another selection begins when the park opens, even if you made your first booking at 7:00 AM.
There is another redemption event not included in the description above, and that’s the expiration of your Genie+ arrival window. Here’s an outline of the redemption events:
- Once you’ve redeemed your initial selection, OR
- The arrival window has passed, OR
- 120 minutes elapse from your previous selection (or park open)
Physically Redeeming Genie+ Lightning Lane
This redemption event occurs when you physically tap into the current Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane selection. Let’s say that you have booked Peter Pan’s Flight for a 9:30am to 10:30am return time when Magic Kingdom opens at 8am.
While the 120-minute rule would apply starting at 10am, if you tap in at 9:30am, you can make another Genie+ Lightning Lane selection shortly after you tap into the ride (usually instantly, but allow for a minute or two).
In Two Hours (120 minutes)
The next scenario is that you will have to wait 120 minutes from your previous selection time to be able to make your next Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane selection. This can happen for a variety of reasons, and there might be some strategy involved here depending on how quickly Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane return times are selling out.
We’ll go back to our Peter Pans Flight example above to explain how the 120-minute rule applies. If Magic Kingdom opens at 8am and you made a Genie+ Lightning Lane for Peter Pans Flight from 12:30pm to 1:30pm, you will be eligible to book a new Genie+ Lightning Lane selection before you tap into the attraction.
In our example, you’d be able to make a new Genie+ Lightning Lane attraction selection starting at 10am, which would be 120 minutes after Magic Kingdom opened at 8am.
After Your Genie+ Lightning Lane Redemption Window Expires
This is probably not a scenario that you’d experience often or ever on your Walt Disney World vacation, but you will also be eligible to make a new Genie+ Lightning Lane selection once your current valid Genie+ selection expires.
