Following last night’s announcement that a Monsters Inc. Land is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney Imagineering has revealed a model of the first-ever suspended roller coaster for a Disney theme park. Here’s a detailed look at the Monsters Inc. Door coster model on display at the 2024 D23 Expo!
Monsters Inc. Door Coaster Model
While we still don’t know where, exactly, the Monsters Inc. Land will be located in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we do have a few pieces of concept art of the land itself, as well as concept art from inside the long-awaited attraction.
An all-new land is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios based on the Monsters Inc. movies. Picking up after the events of Pixar’s beloved film, humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. — and the monsters need laughter to power the city and keep it running smoothly. But it’s not a true visit without the factory itself. You’ll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (a.k.a. Sulley) and Mike Wazowski — via a door!
If you’ve been dreaming of riding through the door vault since the movie was released in 2001, you’re not alone — Josh D’Amaro has been thinking about this, too. “The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., all I wanted to do was ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley,” he told the crowd. “You’ll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park. Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and hoist them up into the air to take them away? We’re doing that, too. And you’re going along for the ride.”
The model is a basic white 3D print of the show building facade and two massive show rooms. It certainly doesn’t offer any real clues as to where in Disney’s Hollywood Studios the roller coaster will be located. In fact, the box-shaped building can likely be placed just about anywhere. A TV above the model cycles through the concept art seen earlier in this article.
The model appears to show the door claw grab moment. With only a single piece of concept art for the ride, and only a few details, the photo below appears to show the load and unload area on two different levels. Other than that, we can trace the track through the two partitioned rooms, but the roller coaster appears to be light on variety. That said, it should still be a very thrilling ride and one that hits the mark on wish fulfilment for Monsters Inc. fans.
