Imagineering Files Four New Permits for Set Installation in Monsters Inc. Land

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed four new Notice of Commencement permits this morning, indicating new work is coming to the Monsters Inc. Land currently under construction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While exterior work is well underway to transform the facades of the former Muppets Courtyard section of the park, these new permits indicate that set installation is ready for the interior of some buildings. Here’s the latest.

Imagineering Files Four Permits for Set Installation in Monsters Inc. Land

This morning, Walt Disney Imagineering filed four Notice of Commencement permits for set installation at four different locations in Monstropolis, the Monsters Inc.-themed land coming to life at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

All four permits list Icarus Exhibits as the contractor for the work, and the scope of the work is listed as “install set elements”. The addresses on the permits resolve to the following locations:

  • Former PizzeRizzo building
  • Former MuppetVision 3D building
  • Former Mama Melrose building
  • Former Muppets gift shop building

Of those, the first three are for structures that are still standing. This likely indicates that the new set elements will be installed inside the building. The fourth address is for a building that has been completely demolished. Disney demolished the former Muppets gift shop to open up the area and create a courtyard.

The inclusion of this demolished space makes me wonder if the other permits are actually for some sort of exterior set dressing on the facades. It’s something we’ll keep an eye on in the coming months as work continues.

The contractor for the work, Icarus Exhibits, has previously been featured on the Disney Parks Blog as a local business with deep ties to Walt Disney World. The partnership between Icarus Exhibits and Disney dates back to the 1990s, when they first started working with Imagineering on a Magic Kingdom project.

Since then, Icarus has worked on a number of projects, including TRON Lightcycle Run, Toy Story Land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, EPCOT Festivals, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, Soarin’ Across America, and much, much more.

When Monstropolis opens, guests will be able to experience the first-ever suspended roller coaster in a Disney theme park. The Monsters Inc. Door Vault roller coaster will even feature a vertical lift system as a way to “launch” the ride.
