Disneyland Paris Begins Construction on Solar Panels Built Over Guest Parking Spaces to Provide Shade and Produce Renewable Energy

Disneyland Paris has announced that they have begun construction on project in partnership with Urbasolar to build a solar plant over the resort’s main guest parking lot.

While Disneyland Paris did not release concept art with the announcement, here’s a look at one of the solutions provided by Urbasolar.

The new solar plant will be built in phases and is expected to be completed in 2023. The aim of the project is to increase the amount of renewable energy produced and consumed locally by Disneyland Paris.

The milestone comes on the heels of the destination’s phased reopening of its two parks, Disney Village and Disney’s Newport Bay Club Hotel that began last week, as well as the restart of other construction and refurbishment projects at Disneyland Paris.

Solar projects have become a staple of Disney Parks’ strategy going forward, with Walt Disney World creating a solar facility that can generate enough energy to power two of the four theme parks at the resort.

Readers of our site may remember when we showed off the 5-megawatt “Hidden Mickey” solar facility near Epcot. A newly renovated McDonald’s recently opened on Walt Disney World that is attempting to be 100% solar powered.

What do you think? Would you like to see the parking lot solar panels come to the Walt Disney World theme parks to provide some shade from the Florida sun while providing renewable energy? The Hollywood Studios parking lot alone is roughly 80 acres, counting both Cast Member and guest parking areas.

  1. We have these at the Cincinnati Zoo and they’re wonderful! It’s great to come back to your car on a hot summer day and find that it’s still nice and cool from sitting in the shade. I can only imagine how nice it would be at Disney World.

The best part is that the zoo’s installation actually powers the entire zoo and sends some power back to the grid on all but the hottest days of the year. And that’s a relatively small installation. A parking lot the size of Disney World’s could produce a huge amount of electricity!
