Orange County officials held a COVID-19 update yesterday, and offered a new look into the community and how the region is doing in the fight against COVID-19.

In the update, Dr. Raul Pino noted that 14-day rolling positivity rates for COVID-19 in the county have crept up to nearly 6% – a positivity rate that could technically trigger county action based on the previously drawn line in the sand of a 5% positivity rate.

Pino said that the increase in COVID-19 cases was “not alarming, but it’s trending”. Pino said that cases would continue to rise if the county and residents did not take necessary steps to curb the increase. As an example, Pino noted that every day last week included an increase in COVID-19 cases. Pino noted that those numbers are “an indication that things are brewing” in the community.

Pino went on to say that the county has done research into the trends for hospitalizations and deaths and found that 95% of both were among unvaccinated individuals. Pino pleaded with unvaccinated individuals to get vaccinated – a measure that Walt Disney World encourages as well.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings did not say that any preventative measures would be immediately implemented in Orange County following this rise in positivity rate, but encouraged all unvaccinated individuals to get vaccinated.

At Walt Disney World, Disney continues to relax COVID-19 safety protocols. From relaxing face mask rules to the reintroduction of high density events such as fireworks, Disney World looks to be pushing ahead towards a return to normalcy.
