UPDATE: Walt Disney Imagineering Extends Tree of Life “Demolition” Permit at Animal Kingdom

|

Well, new information means that it’s time to fire up the speculation machine again. A newly (re)filed permit for the Tree of Life extends a previously twice-filed permit that calls for a “facility demo” at the iconic structure. In this update, we’ll talk about what the recent change is and what it could mean for the Tree of Life.

Tree of Life Demolition Permit

If this feels like deja vu all over again, you’d be correct. This is now the third version of a notice of commencement permit for “facility demo, general construction, electrical, and area development” at the Tree of Life in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In fact, this is the second time that we’ve written about this permit this month alone. So what has changed? Let’s dive in.

A “new” permit was filed on December 26th for demolition at an address for the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This new permit follows a December 22nd permit that called for the same scope of work and the same contractor – Whiting-Turner.

So, what is different? The December 22nd permit, which we covered a few days ago, had an interesting expiration date of December 30th. In our original article, we called out the expiration date as strange and thought that it could be a typo.

Now, the December 26th version of the permit removes the expiration date completely, extending the life of the permit until December 25, 2026. This extended expiration date could open up an entire possibility of work that could be done under the scope of this permit.

In our article earlier this week, we assumed that the short expiration date meant that the work would be small in scope, amounting to a quick fix. Now, with a standard 1-year expiration date, the scope of the work could be much, much larger.

In fact, it is our understanding that the Tree of Life itself will be undergoing a refurbishment in 2026. It’s unclear how long the refurbishment will last, but it could be quite some time.

In preparation for the upcoming work, and out of an abundance of caution, Walt Disney World installed safety nets in the queue area under the Tree of Life. It is believed that these safety nets are temporary and will be removed when the Tree of Life refurbishment is complete.

What adds another layer of intrigue to this story is that the December 26th version of the permit and the December 22nd version of the permit aren’t even the original version of the permit. The original version of this permit was filed back in February 2025, ahead of the closure of the It’s Tough to be a Bug attraction for the transformation into Zootopia: Better Zoogether.

Back in February, we assumed that this permit was limited in scope to work related to the new Zootopia show. Now, with the show open and the permit extended through the end of 2026, it remains to be seen what other work will take place in and around the Tree of Life.

One thing that I can say with absolute certainty is that there is no way that Walt Disney World is actually going to demolish the Tree of Life. That said, Walt Disney World has not returned a request for comment about the specifics of the upcoming work.
