Imagineering to Utilize Adobe AI for Theme Park Design Work

Disney is bringing a new set of AI tools into the mix when it comes to theme park design. Adobe announced a collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development today to speed up the design and pre-production pipeline for Disney Parks and Experiences. The deal centers on custom models trained on Imagineering’s own assets. Here’s what those tools will actually do, and where they fit in the creative process.

USING ADOBE’S “FIREFLY FOUNDRY”

The work is delivered through Adobe Firefly Foundry, a product that lets businesses build their own generative AI models with Adobe. Disney’s versions are customized on existing Imagineering assets and tuned to its specific brands.

Adobe frames the appeal around control. Models trained on scraped internet data offer no guarantees on IP fidelity, brand consistency, or where the output came from. Adobe says its custom model is built instead on Imagineering’s own design catalog and developed on licensed and proprietary assets.

THREE WORKFLOWS COME FIRST

Adobe outlined three initial tools Imagineers will use, each aimed at a different stage of design.

The first is a sketch-to-image model that turns rough hand-drawn concepts into fully rendered 2D concept art. The pitch is speed, letting designers iterate quickly and explore dozens of directions before committing to one.

The second is a custom image model that generates on-brand, franchise-accurate assets. Adobe lists Mickey & Friends, Frozen, Moana, Lilo & Stitch, and Cars as examples, with the goal of accelerating the concept and design phase for future attractions.

FROM 2D RENDERINGS TO 3D PROTOTYPES

The third tool moves into three dimensions. It takes 2D renderings and design concepts and turns them into detailed 3D prototypes.

That capability points downstream toward the build. Adobe says it gives designers tools to plan builds, estimate materials, and coordinate with engineering teams before construction starts. The stated end state is a pipeline that runs from hand-drawn sketch to construction-quality CAD model.

WHAT BOTH SIDES ARE SAYING

Adobe’s Hannah Elsakr, vice president of GenAI New Business Ventures, framed the deal around storytelling. “Storytelling is in Disney’s DNA. Empowering creators with the latest AI innovations is in ours,” she said. “As the teams at Imagineering build new experiences for fans around the world, our tools and workflows will provide a creative foundation to explore bolder ideas and make the best ones a reality.”

Kyle Laughlin, SVP of R&D, Technology and Engineering at Walt Disney Imagineering, tied the work to the company’s long-running balance of tech and craft. “At Imagineering, we’ve always believed technology and human creativity can work together responsibly,” he said. “Our work with Adobe lets us bring Disney stories and characters to life in our Parks faster, and with the emotional quality our guests expect.”

WHY IT MATTERS AS DISNEY EXPANDS

Disney is growing its footprint across parks, hotels, cruises, and more. Adobe positions Firefly Foundry as a way for Imagineering to iterate faster across that expansion while holding its creative standards.

Disney has not detailed which specific projects will use these tools, or when. For now this is a stated capability and a set of initial workflows, not a look at any specific attraction or experience in development.
