Disneyland President: We’re Disappointed with Lack of Progress from State

Disneyland President Ken Potrock decided to turn up the heat a bit on the state of California and Governor Gavin Newsom, issuing a statement on the lack of progress from the state of California in issuing reopening guidance (via OC Register).

We are disappointed with the state’s lack of progress in providing the industry with guidance and clarity on reopening. We have proven we can operate responsibly, with strict health and safety protocols at our properties around the world and at Downtown Disney in Anaheim.

Tens of thousands of people’s livelihoods depend on our ability to operate and we stand ready and willing to accelerate discussions with the Governor and his team to make ‘real progress’ toward our reopening and getting people back to work.

As we previously reported, Disneyland has been reportedly targeting a late-September reopening, a date that has been thrown into question with the new color-coded system from the state of California.

Potrock’s statement reiterates what Disney Parks chief Josh D’Amaro stated weeks ago – Disneyland is ready to reopen.

Walt Disney World has been open in Orlando, FL for over two months now, and local officials have yet to link a COVID-19 outbreak to the theme parks despite combing over the data to search for one. Disney World has, in our opinion, been the industry leader in safety at the theme parks, even recently issuing a ban to a guest who refused to follow the mandatory mask rules. Disney World has also implemented physical distancing throughout the parks and is limiting capacity via a theme park reservation system.

Governor Gavin Newsom has teased a reopening announcement, but failed to provide any specifics.

  1. When Newsom runs for reelection I hope Disney remembers his treatment towards the amusement park industry and does not donate one dime to his campaign!
