California Governor Teases Disneyland Reopening Announcement: “We’re Getting Closer”

In a press conference today California Governor Gavin Newsom said that the state continues to engage in “negotiations” with theme parks in determining a reopening date.

Although he was not asked about theme parks directly, Newsom said that “conversations are ongoing” and that the state of California is “getting closer to concluding when and how to reopen theme parks”. Disney Parks Chairman, and former Disneyland President, Josh D’Amaro has stated that Disney is “ready to go” and have been since their previously announced July 17th reopening date.

While the governor continues to tease an announcement, Orange County moved into the “red” tier of the state of California’s COVID-19 color coded system for reopening earlier today. This is certainly a step in the right direction, but also highlights a potentially long road ahead for the county to move into better tiers. According to Newsom, a county would need to demonstrate lower numbers for two consecutive weeks before moving to a better tier, which would allow more businesses to reopen. Newsom also stated that a county will need to be in their current tier for at least 3 weeks before they can move into a better tier.

Before the mid-March closure of Disneyland, Newsom received backlash for exempting Disneyland from state limitations on gatherings. The state discussions with theme parks appear to be taking place outside of the normal discussions as it relates to businesses, but its unclear when Disneyland will reopen at this point.

In late August, we wrote that our sources indicated to us that Disneyland was targeting a late-September date. While it’s very likely that Disneyland continues to target an opening as soon as possible, the state continues to prevent them from opening.

In Florida, Walt Disney World has been open for nearly 2 months having reopened July 11th. Disney World has continuously shown that they are committed to guest and Cast Member safety, and Florida officials have not been able to link a COVID-19 outbreak to the theme parks.

    1. How much how much longer do we have to wait for Disneyland to open? A summer without disneyland really sucks big time. Do you think that Disneyland will be open the first part of October ?.We are patiently waiting for them to be open . I know that there will be rules to follow. I have granddaughter whose birthday is the 12 th of October and she wants to do to Disneyland for her birthday

    2. I’m glad Texas has a governor who believes in letting people work. Just because you work in an “unessential” business doesn’t mean you don’t need to make a living. I’ve been to Six Flags here multiple times and felt way safer than going to the grocery store. At Six Flags there are temperature checks, masks, capacity limits, and hand sanitizer everywhere. I’ve been to grocery stores that don’t have any hand sanitizer or even anything to wipe down cart handles and that are massively crowded. I don’t understand the double standard.
