New Construction Project Underway at Swiss Family Treehouse in Magic Kingdom

A multi-story scrim has appeared on the back of the Swiss Family Treehouse at Magic Kingdom, marking new construction work at the walkthrough attraction. Nothing about this work appears on the refurbishment calendar, and it isn’t clear yet what Disney is working on. The attraction remains open for guests to climb, so the treehouse itself is likely safe to walk while the work happens nearby. We climbed up and back down today to see what we could.

  • The scrim runs multiple stories, but the treehouse remains fully open.
  • There’s nothing on the refurbishment calendar to explain the work.

Approaching the attraction from the front, the treehouse almost looks normal. That said, a themed scrim looms at the back of the attraction.

The scrim only reveals itself once you take a closer look. It’s positioned on the back side of the structure, printed with a sky-and-foliage pattern to blend into the surrounding greenery.

What We Saw On Our Hike

The scrim is tall, spanning multiple levels of the treehouse as you ascend. In some spots it’s a blue printed sky panel with foliage, in others a darker green mesh, and both are strung between the tree limbs and the platform railings.

At one of the upper landings, the theming has been pulled back entirely to expose bare metal decking as part of the scaffolding. The perforated metal platform, normally hidden behind scrims, sits open here. There is a protective wrap around the trunk and branches that pass through the deck.

Walt Disney World has not announced any construction work, and they have not responded to a request for comment about the work. With nothing on the schedule, it’s possible that the work is reactive rather than proactive.

The Treehouse Stays Open

Despite the scrim, the full climb up the Swiss Family Treehouse is open. Guests can walk the entire route up to the crow’s nest and back down, past the scrimmed sections, without any portion of the path closed off.

The ground-level scene at the base, with its barrels, waterwheel setup, and dining tableau, is also fully intact and viewable. Whatever the work involves, it hasn’t taken the attraction offline.
