Disney CEO Bob Chapek Incorrectly Claims Splash Mountain is 60 Years Old, Acknowledges Backlash from “Superfans”

In a recent interview, Disney CEO Bob Chapek talked about some of the Diversity & Inclusion changes happening at the theme parks. In the interview, he acknowledged that “Superfans” don’t want to see changes to attractions within the theme parks that are considered part of the park’s legacy. To that end, Chapek incorrectly claimed that Splash Mountain is 60 years old, but that it is problematic because it is based off of a movie called Song of the South that he said depicted “happy slaves”.

Chapek acknowledged that the attraction has “really high guest ratings”, but that it takes courage to change an attraction that is tied to a movie that Disney has been working hard to distance itself from. Chapek went on to say that Disney has hired a diverse group of people to oversee the conversion of Splash Mountain into a Princess and the Frog-themed attraction.
