As COVID-19 Sweeps Through Cast Members, Disney Faces Backlog of Requests

COVID-19 cases are increasing across workplaces and communities around the country, and the Disney Parks are not immune. COVID-19 is sweeping through pockets of Cast Members, and it’s beginning to affect staffing and operations at the theme parks.

According to Workers United Local 50 Disneyland union, Disney is facing a backlog of COVID-19 medical pay requests. The flood of new requests due to the increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases among Cast Members has prompted Disney to increase resources to help with the backlog in requests.

Wait times on the phone are reportedly hours long and response times are delayed. According to the union, “Disney is aware that response time on COVID submissions on the HUB are delayed”. Local 50 has informed members that Disney “is placing more resources to help with the problem”.

Disney has not made any operational adjustments to mitigate the risk of contracting COVID-19 at its theme parks since the start of the Omicron surge. Face masks are still required indoors, but there are virtually no other mitigation efforts in effect. Disney Parks Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pamela Hymel has not penned a health and safety update since July 2020, with the exception of a May 2021 article about vaccines featuring The Muppets.

    1. The issue isn’t just in CA. My kid is an intern at the WDW In Florida and her roommate is positive with Covid. She actually shares a room with her and Disney has not quarantined the positive person. So all three of the roomates are left being exposed.
