According to BlogMickey.com sources, Walt Disney World will soon be disabling all MagicBand 1.0 devices. First unveiled in 2013, the MagicBand is a wearable device that aims to create a more seamless experience with digital services and physical activations at the domestic Disney theme parks and, now, Disney Cruise Line. The MagicBand 1.0 was exclusive to Walt Disney World and was replaced by the MagicBand 2.0 back in 2016. In 2021, Disney World introduced the MagicBand+ device, which is the current wearable found on Disney World store shelves.
Disney to Deactivate All MagicBand 1.0 Devices
According to the rumor, Disney World will begin deactivating all MagicBand 1.0 devices soon. The change is expected to take place this month. The change will be automatic, but guests can reactivate MagicBand 1.0 devices through the Walt Disney World website, under the “My MagicBands and Cards” page (https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/plan/bands-cards).
An example of the rumored change can be seen below (using a MagicBand+ device). When the change takes effect, MagicBand 1.0 devices will all be deactivated and show “inactive” as seen below. If guests would like to reactivate their MagicBand 1.0 device, they should be able to simply click the “Activate” button to make the MagicBand active again (as seen below).
As to the reason for the change, BlogMickey.com has reached out to Walt Disney World for comment, but we have not received a response. If we had to guess, there is probably some backend system or process that will greatly benefit from fewer MagicBand devices to read or manage. It’s likely that very, very few MagicBand 1.0 devices are utilized nowadays at Walt Disney World, and that this change won’t affect many guests. Disney stopped selling MagicBand 1.0 devices some time ago.
This change will not affect MagicBand 2.0 devices or MagicBand+.
Keep in mind that this is a rumor at this point and that any information in this article should be considered unofficial unless and until Disney World confirms it.
