Disney Teases Villains Land Update for Destination D23

|

While Disney fans are feeling let down that there will not be a dedicated Disney theme parks showcase presentation at the upcoming Destination D23 event later this month, that doesn’t mean that the event will be devoid of news (hopefully). Disney D23 released the full presentation schedule yesterday, and fans were quick to notice the absence of a dedicated theme park panel. That said, Disney did tease that there will be more info on Villains-themed experiences coming to the theme parks. Here’s what they said, and what we are expecting to hear.

Villains Land Update Teased for Destination D23

Join Disney Experiences (and some of your favorite troublemakers) for a panel discussion on how Disney Villains experiences come to life around the world. Hear directly from the creative minds behind new projects and attractions, plus enjoy a special Villains-themed medley to kick off Destination D23 day 2.

The 45-minute panel will take place from 9:05am to 9:50am on Sunday, August 31st. This is the only panel that hints at theme park updates, and even then, it could be a bit light on details for a project that is still seemingly years away. That said, the updated description does say that the panel will have the creative minds “behind new projects and attractions”.

That is about as close to confirmation that Villains Land will be on the topic for discussion. We’d also expect some discussion on the new Disney Villains Unfairly Ever After show now playing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We could also see some discussion taking place around how Villains have an increasing role in Disney’s Halloween events around the world.

As previously announced, the new Villains Land will have two major attractions, dining, and shopping. The only piece of concept art released so far is the one shown above, and seen below from the 2024 D23 Expo. Disney has said that the new land will be home to the Disney Villains we know and loathe from our favorite Walt Disney Animation Studios classic films.

Villains Land announcement at 2024 D23 Expo

Disney describes the land as “dark and thorny”, built to “an incredibly twisted grand scale”. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro said that the new land would be “a fearless new vision for what a Disney experience can be”.

In terms of attractions for Villains Land, we expect that one of the rides will be a roller coaster, and the second ride may end up utilizing a dynamic ride system that would immerse guests in the storyline.

A Villains Land was first teased back in 2022 when the “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” project was announced. Of course, that project has morphed into something completely different – ditching Coco and Encanto areas to focus on Cars. That said, the Villains Land concept survived, and it was the theme park announcement at the 2022 D23 Expo that received the best fan reception.
