Harambe Market New Menu Review: Do Burgers & Chicken Strips Taste Better in Africa?

|

Harambe Market is officially open to guests and is the new go-to spot for burgers and chicken strips in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The new Harambe Market menu takes over for the now-closed Restaurantosaurus in the now-closed DinoLand USA. We stopped by Harambe Market to try the new menu and ponder the question: do burgers and chicken strips taste better in Africa?

Harambe Market New Menu Review

We’ll start with the basics. Here’s a look at the menu board. As you can see, the menu has been dumbed down adjusted, with Harambe Market serving as the new go-to spot for burgers and chicken strips at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Simply put, every theme park needs a spot for burgers and chicken tenders, and Harambe Market had to take over for the now-closed Restaurantosaurus.

Actually, we visited Restaurantosaurus just days before it closed to try a few things off the menu. We found some decent options, but we concluded that the new Tropical Americas-themed quick-service spot can only get better from a pretty low culinary bar.

Back to Harambe Market, here’s a look at the menu board that is presented to guests.

Following a few days of soft opening, the venue is now up and operational as of today. That means that guests are now able to order via Mobile Order as well, and it’s encouraged. We visited during lunch today, and it’s clear that they were overwhelmed with the process, but hopefully it can be ironed out in a few days.

So, what did we get? Initially, we got a burger, the new chicken wrap, and the new cookie. That said, the title “Do Burgers & Chicken Strips Taste Better in Africa?” doesn’t really work if I don’t eat the chicken strips too, so I went back for an order of chicken strips, against my better judgment.

Here’s our review of the new menu at Harambe Market!

Delicious burger, chicken strips, and fries at Harambe Market in Africa.

In what can only be described as deja vu all over again, I find myself staring at a 1/3 lb Angus Cheeseburger. Again, I opted out of the bacon version simply to see what the base burger tasted like. I described the Restaurantosaurus version of this burger as “the worst burger you can purchase at Walt Disney World”.

As it turns out, the burger was far more edible at Harambe Market, but I want to say that was more a function of operations than anything else. We don’t seem to be working with any new burger blend or presentation here. It’s still bun, lettuce, tomato, patty, cheese, bun. That said, I found this patty to be much better cooked than the “nearly rubber” version at Restaurantosaurus.

Could burgers and chicken strips actually taste better in Africa? So far, so good.

Harissa Chicken Wrap | $10.99

Chilled Tandoori Rotisserie Chicken with Harissa Mayonnaise wrapped in a Flour Tortilla and served with French Fries

Chicken wraps with fries at Harambe Market in Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Now we’re talking. While the vast, vast majority of guests that I observed were walking away from the Mobile Order window with burgers and chicken strips, there was the odd Harissa Chicken Wrap on the tray – easily identifiable by the green flour tortilla.

I thought that this was a pretty good wrap. The chilled tandoori rotisserie chicken was cooked wonderfully, and there was plenty of it in the wrap. There was also a pretty high concentration of carrots, which I could’ve done with a lower density of.

The real winner here was the harissa mayo. By definition, harissa sounds like something that the average guest would be wary of. It is a hot chili pepper paste, which the family from Denver will typically steer clear of. That said, this is presented as a harissa mayonnaise, which is far more approachable. I thought that there was a nice spice here, without being spicy. Certainly not enough to linger on your tongue.

The Harissa Chicken Wrap was the clear winner for me, but it wouldn’t be a complete review without ordering the chicken strips too, so I pulled out my phone to Mobile Order some Chicken Strips to walk around with.

Chicken Strips | $10.99

Served with French Fries

Whereas Restaurantosaurus had a rather tasty Waffle Cone Chicken Strips offering, Harambe Market has the standard chicken strips and fries that you can find elsewhere at Walt Disney World. Like the burger, this is a serviceable option for picky eaters. You’ll find four chicken strips sharing space with fries.

There are a number of condiment stations at Harambe Market, and here’s the current lineup:

  • Ketchup
  • Ranch
  • Honey Mustard
  • BBQ Sauce

In addition, there are packets of ketchup, mustard, and mayo at nearby stations as well.

Topped with Chocolate Cream Cookies, Potato Chips, M&M’S® Milk Chocolate candies, and Dulce de Leche

This is both a literal feast and a visual feast. Talk about a junk food cookie. I enjoy each of these elements individually far more than I should (just finished a “family-sized” pack of Oreo’s recently), but I’m not sure if I like them all put together.

Actually, I take that back. I think I do like them all together, but it was the base cookie that I didn’t really enjoy. I thought that it was chewy, yes, but it also seemed stale at points. I’m not sure if that’s because of the bake with these elements, or if they were all added after the fact. Either way, there were some parts of the cookie that just weren’t pleasant to deal with.

I did like the salty/sweet combo here, and the dollop of Dulce de Leche was good, if not oddly placed as just a central element.

Harambe Market Closing Thoughts

I’ll close out with just a few thoughts on the state of Harambe Market. It’s very clear that this change is driven by operations. This isn’t a culinary story, or some new and exciting upgrade to a corner of Animal Kingdom. Instead, it is a necessity, and it’s sort of treated like one. Unthemed tables sit in the pathways of an otherwise beautifully themed theme park land. Theming that once wove food and backstory together is now disregarded. Disney needed to have a place for tourists to grab burgers and chicken strips, and they have that now. However, I’m not sure I see a clear exit strategy.

When the Tropical Americas land opens next year, I would be SHOCKED if the burgers and chicken strips menu returned to the Restaurantosaurus-turned-hacienda quick-service venue. With no clear spot for burgers and chicken strips to land, I’m worried that this menu change at Harambe Market may not be as temporary as I first thought it would be.

Just last Summer, the venue was serving chicken and rice bowls, beef and lamb pitas, and specialty beverages. I still remember many visits to Harambe Market back when they serve gyros.

While the rice bowls moved over to Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery, we think that Harambe Market deserves a more unique menu than burgers and chicken strips, long-term.

  1. Do they really need those extra un-themed chairs and tables? They specifically built the expanded seating area to the left of this photo for the moving of burgers and tenders to Harambe Market.

    • We should know more about demand on the location when Spring Break arrives, but they might find that they need them in addition to the rest of the seating. If they need them long-term, I hope there is a themed solution
