Disney Peter Pan’s depiction of Indians is loosely based on the old stereotype of the children’s imaginary game of Cowboys and Indians. No one is expected to believe the Indians in the performance in anyway is supposed to identify with actual American Indians. If you feel this is the case however, is it Disney with the problem, or the individual thinking this way? As I grew up, I was taught there was a difference between animated Indians verses “actual” living American Indians. My parents thought it was important for people to understand satirical comedy and not to take ‘everything’ seriously, because that would make life too boring. I can respect that.
Totally agree. Growing up I never associated or even thought to associate cartoon indians with the depiction in Peter Pan. And as I grew up and read history of their people I never thought to do an after-the-fact comparison.
Excuse me cartoon indians with the real people. Their animated act was over the top to be believable as a kid.
Unless you are a Native American it matters exactly 0% what you think or how you feel on the subject. If they are offended, it’s offensive.
