Today, Cast Members will be the final people to experience MuppetVision 3D. Starting tomorrow, construction begins on the transformation of Muppets Courtyard into a Monsters Inc.-themed land. Actually, work is already underway backstage, establishing a 10-acre site in the Hollywood Studios Cast Member parking lot. Here’s what we know.
Monsters Inc. Construction Takes Over Cast Member Parking Lot
A roughly 10-acre chunk of the Cast Member parking lot has been walled off as Walt Disney World begins work on a Monsters Inc. Land for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. As seen in the screenshot below, the Cast Member parking lot in question is located “behind” Muppets Courtyard, and the all-new door vault roller coaster will extend into the parking lot.
The walled-off section of the parking lot is estimated to be roughly 10 acres, but could be more or less. Either way, it is a significant chunk of the parking lot. So much so that an overflow parking area has been established in a portion of the regular guest parking lot area for Cast Members.
As noted in our annotated version of the Monsters Inc. Land concept art, the door vault roller coaster will be a true expansion, taking over previously unused acreage behind the current footprint of Muppets Courtyard. In fact, you can see that the entrance to the ride is set back, nearly flush with the show building for the nearby Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Comparing that with the aerial screenshot above, you can start to picture how the ride will expand into the Cast Member parking lot.
It’s probably worth noting that the 10-acre construction site is not purely for the door vault coaster. Instead, the door vault coaster will likely only take up a portion of the reserved space. It is likely that the majority of the acreage will be used by construction crews, either for staging equipment, project offices, or debris piles.
Construction is expected to officially begin soon.
