Walt Disney World Annual Passholders are still under a Disney Park Pass theme park reservation restriction implemented for the debut of the Disney Starlight parade, despite it being rather pointless now. The restriction requires any guests wishing to start their day at Magic Kingdom to obtain a Disney Park Pass reservation. The restriction does not apply to guests wishing to Park Hop from another Walt Disney World theme park. In this article, we’ll take a look at what the restriction is and why it’s pretty pointless right now.
Magic Kingdom Park Pass Restriction for Annual Passholders
With the debut of the Disney Starlight parade, Walt Disney World was anticipating a bump in crowds. To mitigate that, Disney implemented a new Disney Park Pass restriction for Annual Passholders. The restriction remains as of publish time of this article. Here’s what it says:
- For a Limited Time: Due to anticipated high demand for the new Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away parade, Passholders visiting Magic Kingdom park at any time of day (including after 2:00 PM) must have a theme park reservation. Passholders may enter EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park after 2:00 PM without a theme park reservation.
- Check Back for Updates: After this limited-time period, Annual Passholders may visit the theme parks without a theme park reservation on a good-to-go day or after 2:00 PM (except on Saturdays and Sundays at Magic Kingdom park). 
Now, with the initial hype normalizing a bit (still significant crowds at the 9pm showing, though), Magic Kingdom operations should find themselves in a position where they are able to handle the crowds.
In fact, Disney isn’t even hitting a theoretical cap on Annual Passholder attendance at Magic Kingdom, as there are currently no sold-out days on the Disney Park Pass calendar for Magic Kingdom or any Walt Disney World theme park.
In fact, while there was a rare four-park Disney Park pass sellout for the Disney Starlight parade debut on July 20th, reservations magically opened back up hours before the parade started. That is to say that even on the day of the debut, Park Pass theme park reservations were somewhat pointless (to the extent that a Passholder could mobilize within a few hours).
Beyond that, Park Hopping has not faced any restrictions during the opening days of the Disney Starlight nighttime parade. That means that even if you couldn’t get a Magic Kingdom park reservation in the days leading up to the parade, you would’ve faced no issues tapping into, say, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and then Park Hopping over to Magic Kingdom before the parade debuted.
All that to say is that while we can certainly understand Disney’s idea to offer some restrictions in an effort to ensure that crowd levels don’t get out of hand, it’s time to go back to normal for Disney Park Pass and drop the Disney Starlight theme park reservation restrictions. Walt Disney World did not return a request for comment on when the restriction would be removed.
In fact, while I have you here, how about dropping the Disney Park Pass reservation system completely at Walt Disney World? Every day is wide open, and even the busiest times of year appear to be effectively managed through Annual Passholder blockout dates. Just a thought.
