Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar Review: NEW Menu Lands at Indiana Jones Bar in Disney Springs

|

Set along the Disney Springs lakefront of Lake Buena Vista is Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar. The bar is themed after Jock Lindsey from the Indiana Jones movies, and it features a highly-themed space with some delicious drinks and bites for guests visiting Disney Springs. While there are a lot of dining options at Disney Springs, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar is one of the few Disney-owned dining venues at the shopping and dining complex. We recently stopped by to try the (almost) completely brand-new menu, so let’s jump into our Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar new menu review!

Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar New Menu Review

Out of the ten “light bites” currently on the Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar menu, eight of the items are brand new. This is about as close to a full menu revamp as you can get. The two returning favorites are the Air Pirate’s Cargo Loaded Pretzel ($22.50) and the Chicken on the Egg ($15.00). Other than that, we’re going to try and work our way through the new menu (spoiler alert, we needed to-go boxes).

Orange Pilsner Goat Cheese Dip | $12.50

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Goat Cheese whipped with Sunshine Stroll Orange Pilsner and Peppadew served with Salt and Vinegar House Chips

We’ll start with the goat cheese dip, which is technically a holdover from the limited-time Flavors of Florida event. This dip is made with the Sunshine Stroll Orange Pilsner, which is an exclusive beer to Disney-owned dining locations at Disney Springs from Playalinda Brewing Company. While that’s a fun tidbit, don’t expect the dip to actually taste like beer. The flavor is almost exclusively goat cheese (which we’re big fans of, in general) with some help from the Peppadew peppers. The Peppadew peppers are mild peppers, and you only get a slight kick of heat from this dip – nothing that should scare you away.

The housemade chips have a nice little crunch to them. Occasionally, chips like these can get on the soggy/soft side, but that was not our experience here. The chips are a salt and vinegar flavor, trending toward the salt side of that occasion. Whenever I think of salt and vinegar chips or fries, I almost always think of an overwhelming vinegar flavor, but these chips are balanced and mild. When it comes to flavor from this offering, the dip is doing 95% of the heavy lifting.

Club Obi-Wan Wings | $16.00

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Crispy Honey-Pineapple Wings with Pineapple Salsa

Club Obi-Wan is a restaurant, nightclub, and gaming establishment from the Temple of Doom movie. With a name inspired by Star Wars, Club Obi-Wan is the headquarters for Lao Che’s underground gang and it is located in Shanghai, China. The Club Obi-Wan Wings are eight bone-in wings, served with a honey-pineapple glaze and topped with fresh pineapple, peppers, and onion. While these retain the name of the old chicken wings, they are a fresh departure from the past.

The wings themselves were cooked perfectly, making it easy to strip down to the bone. They were wonderfully juicy, but the flavor of the wings left a little bit to be desired. I would’ve preferred something with a stronger base flavor, but thankfully there was plenty of pineapple and pepper to create a bit more kick to the tongue.

Palawan Volcano Temple Dip | $12.50

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Gruyère Cheese Sauce, Onion Jam, and Toasted French Bread

The Palawan Volcano Temple? If that doesn’t sound familiar, that’s because Disney is reaching into the past for a deep cut on the naming of this dish. The Palawan Volcano Temple is from the 1999 PC game Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine which was later ported to Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color. With the Nazis crushed, Indiana Jones turns his attention to the Soviet Union as the Cold War kicks off. We’ll stop the recap there at the risk of losing focus on what we’re here for: a food review!

Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar New Menu Review

Even though the camera always eats first, this dip was still warm when we got to our first bite. Look at the toasted top layer of the gruyère cheese! As seen below, some cheese overflowed the bowl and burnt to the side too. You know you’re in for a delicious cheese dip when there’s a bit of a burn to the dish, and the Palawan Volcano Temple Dip is no exception to that rule. The cheese itself is extremely creamy and the flavors were rich. Cast Members we spoke with said that this was the most popular dish of the new items, and it’s well deserved!

The French bread slices are toasted and have a hard crunch to them – effectively a crostini-style texture. It wasn’t until we were pouring the dip into our to-go container that we noticed just how much onion jam settled into the bottom of the bowl – so make sure you’re scooping deep! Overall, this is a 5-star dish and something that we wouldn’t hesitate to order again.

Shrimp Fried Rice Bites | $14.00

Rating: 3 out of 5.

with Shishito Peppers and Sweet-and-Sour Sauce

Just like most dishes at Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, you expect a certain level of presentation, and the Shrimp Fried Rice Bites don’t disappoint. They’re served in a faux newspaper cone with an extra lip at the top to hold some of the sweet-and-sour sauce (extra sweet-and-sour sauce is attached to the side). The Shrimp Fried Rice Bites will be found under some of the shishito peppers. Chopsticks are available for use as well.

This was a bit of a divisive dish, with a 50/50 split at the table. The complaint was how dense the bite is, with not only a densely packed interior but a heavy mouthfeel as well. The rice was cooked very well, but the shrimp was a bit too much on the fishy side in terms of flavor, which threw the bite off balance a bit. That said, for guests who are looking for something dense and fishy, it’s not a terrible option. We’ll give it a better-than-average rating, with an understanding that even though it wasn’t a standout dish, it wasn’t terrible either.

Mine Car Meatballs | $13.00

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Pork and Beef Meatballs, Sweet-and-Sour BBQ, Chimichurri on Potato Hay

The next dish draws inspiration from an iconic scene out of the Temple of Doom where Indiana Jones, Short Round, and Willie Scott attempted to flee from the temple on a runaway mine car. Unlike the movie, your meatballs won’t roll away from you on this Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar-branded mine car.

Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar New Menu Review

At first glance, this looks like meatballs on top of a bed of french fries, but it’s actually potato hay. We’ll circle back on the potato hay in a minute after we discuss the delicious meatballs on top. There are five meatballs on top, and as far as size goes, we’d call them 2-3 bite meatballs. They’re not oversized by any means, but also a little bit more than just a single bite.

I don’t have anything more than a phone photo of the interior of the meatball (and I won’t subject you to iPhone photos), but it was a robust mix of pork and beef. We also spotted some chopped onion mixed into the meatball, so you can imagine how great the base flavor was. Of course, you then add on a generous helping of sweet-and-sour BBQ and a spoonful of chimichurri on top and you have yourself a delicious dish.

I only removed a half-star from the rating due to my initial displeasure with the potato hay. I was hoping for some softness after a crispy exterior bite, but it was all crunch and hard crunch. That said, the texture did pair well with the softness of the meatball. Also, any of the potato hay that came in contact with extra sauce from the meatballs started to soften a bit and that was delicious, but the extra crunchy texture made me not want to clean the dish entirely once the meatballs and sauce were gone. Maybe that’s only worthy of a .25-star deduction. Either way, a delicious dish that we would order again.

Bread Dip Pyramid | $12.50

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Brazilian Cheese Bread, Creamy Tomato, and Chorizo Dip

Brazilian. Cheese. Bread. That might be the whole review for this dish…or at least it would be if we didn’t have a delicious creamy tomato and chorizo dip to discuss as well. Right now, the high water mark for Brazilian Cheese Bread is the not-very-secret-menu Pao de Queijo at Skipper Canteen. The cheese bread here at Jock Lindsey’s doesn’t quite match up to that, but what it lacks in flavor, it makes up for in quantity. There are sixteen cheese bread balls and plenty of dip to go around.

The dip itself is interesting. It has the consistency of a marinara, but the flavor of a creamy tomato soup. Bits of chorizo add texture to the dip and the slightest suggestion of heat. Overall, the flavor profile is that of a tomato soup, and it deliciously pairs with the cheese bread.

We’ll leave you with a parting photo of the inside of the cheese bread with the dip.

Air Tours Bacon and Waffles | $14.00

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Spiced Candied Bacon, Chorizo Waffles, and Honey Balsamic Syrup

It’s probably never good when anything to do with aviation is in quotes. As the backstory goes, Indiana Jones and Jock Lindsey were touring Florida from the air in 1938, searching for the Fountain of Youth when Jock crash-landed in the town of Disney Springs. Eventually, Jock built an airline hangar and used it as a headquarters for his operations. That hangar turned into a bar in 1955 and it was opened to the public. Long story short, a crash-landing led to a bar where candied bacon is presented on a wooden plane that pokes a bit of fun at Jock’s inability to stay airborne over Central Florida.

Once again, the presentation at Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar is above and beyond. In talking with the servers, a lot of these “dishes” have to be washed by hand due to their unique construction – so shout out to the Cast Members who keep these props available day in and day out in a high-traffic environment!

Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar New Menu Review

Another fun element to this dish is the syringe that holds the honey balsamic syrup. It comes with a cap on the end, so you don’t have to worry about it leaking or anything when it arrives at the table. As you can imagine, taking these photos isn’t a quick affair, so it was nice to find that the waffle wasn’t soaked by the time we were ready to take a bite.

There’s actually a second waffle “hidden” behind the curtain of bacon, so make sure that you don’t use the entire honey balsamic syrup on the waffle that it’s stuck into. Actually, let’s talk about the syrup. To me, this is a 2.5-star dish almost entirely because the honey balsamic syrup just didn’t work for me. I was hopeful for something that was closer to syrup, and the flavor was almost entirely balsamic vinegar. The chorizo waffles were quite good, but I wished that I hadn’t applied the syrup to both of them after my very first bite. Actually, the chorizo waffles were so good that I finished them despite the honey balsamic syrup.

The candied bacon was good, but not great. We’ve had better at other locations on property, including The Edison, which is just steps from Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar. Our bacon was soft, but not because it was a thick-cut bacon, which would’ve been a bit more expected – that’s just how it was cooked. This dish has some good bones, but it can’t get high marks due to the somewhat lackluster bacon and an odd honey balsamic syrup.

Snakebite Bao Buns | $15.00

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Smoked Brisket, Ají Amarillo Mustard, Peppadew Relish, Pickled Onion, and Tomato

Alright, I know you’ve noticed the caged food in some of the other photos, and now it’s time to take a closer look at the Snakebite Bao Buns. Before we can do that, we should provide some context on what the cage represents. Of course, if you’ve watched an Indiana Jones movie, you’ll know that he hates snakes. As it so happens, Jock Lindsey owns a snake called Reggie.

In fact, if you take a close enough look at the upper levels of Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, you’ll find Reggie’s cage, but you won’t find Reggie because it looks like the top of the cage has been propped open. Nobody tell Indy!

So, the Snakebite Bao Buns are a fun nod to Reggie and the cage that we’d expect to find him in. Instead, we find our smoked brisket bao buns with ají amarillo mustard, peppadew relish, pickled onion, and tomato. The cage stays on for the presentation of the dish, but your server will take it away before it’s time to eat. Of course, the camera eats first, so here are a couple more photos.

The bao buns were wonderfully soft and even had some grill marks on the back that I didn’t notice until a few bites in. All of the ingredients were noticeably fresh, which is always a plus when you’re ordering a dish that is clearly quality over quantity. That said, we did find the brisket itself to be dry, which is where this offering gets more of its deductions.

We’re also knocking off a sliver of a star for the use of a mustard. Yes, it’s supposed to be a spicy version of a mustard, but the end result for us was closer to a traditional flavor and no noteworthy heat. When combined with a drier-than-expected brisket, there isn’t much saving this dish. For what it’s worth, the brisket flavor was nice and smokey. The dryness of it was just too much to overcome – even with some wonderful accompaniments.

Closing Thoughts on Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar New Menu

With just two items remaining from the previous menu, this is certainly a significant menu overhaul. Just like any menu, you’ll find some winners and losers, but an average score of 3.8 stars across eight items means that this is an above-average update! There were some standout winners that we would absolutely order again when returning with friends.

In a sea of options at Disney Springs, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar remains one of our favorites thanks to the immersive theming, the food presentation, and good drinks. It’s worth stopping in to grab a bite and a drink while enjoying your evening (or Monday afternoon, as it were) at Disney Springs.
