A notice of commencement permit may be the first sign that construction may be getting underway on the previously announced Pirates of the Caribbean tavern at Magic Kingdom.
Pirates of the Caribbean-Themed Tavern
Back in September 2023, Disney World announced plans for a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed tavern for Magic Kingdom. The plans were revealed at the Destination D23 event by Disney Imagineer Chris Beatty.
At the time, Disney said that Imagineers were in the planning stages, but that the tavern would be a “first-of-its-kind experience” that promised to “extend the story of Pirates of the Caribbean attraction”. Disney World released the concept art below.

Now, a permit listing longtime Disney World contractor Whiting-Turner could be the first signs of life for the project. The permit doesn’t give much away in terms of details, but it does list Caribbean Plaza as the location, and has an expiration date of August 31, 2025 – a couple months longer than the typical 1-year expiration timeframe.
The permit was filed today, which makes it unlikely to be for the ongoing clock tower refurbishment that began earlier this year. It’s also important to note that the address of Caribbean Plaza does include the initial outdoor, covered portion of the queue, but not the actual Pirates of the Caribbean attraction itself. The permit address also covers the gift shop, and the former Pirate League experience.
The former Pirates League venue is the leading contender for the upcoming Pirates-themed tavern. The Pirates League venue has been closed since COVID-19, and it would make the perfect location for the upcoming tavern. Now the question is: will there be rum?
