Cinderella Castle Moat Draining Imminent, More Grey Paint Arrives for Castle Restoration

|

Good afternoon from Walt Disney World, where the entire resort is bracing for a deep freeze overnight tonight. While temperatures will dip this evening and into tomorrow, it’s a nice, overcast day so far. We’re at Magic Kingdom, where Disney has begun early work to drain the Cinderella Castle moat. This is a crucial step in the repainting process. Here’s more!

On the Liberty Square/Adventureland side of the moat, we spotted the arrival of the Portadam, a temporary cofferdam that will be used to provide a barrier between the drained and undrained sections of the moat. It looks like the moat isn’t completely installed yet, and that water can still pass through. In fact, there is no similar damming on the east (Tomorrowland) side of Cinderella Castle, so draining can’t begin yet anyway.

Here’s a look at the current state of the temporary dam.

As we walk toward the Tomorrowland side of Cinderella Castle, we have a better look at the current state of the repainting project. As a reminder, Walt Disney World has begun a multi-month project of repainting Cinderella Castle back to grey, inspired by the classic look of the Walt Disney World icon.

When we first spotted the repainting, it was with some direct sunlight. That created some shadows and harsh lighting conditions. With it being an overcast day today, we have a much better look at the difference in color from the existing “rose pink” to the flat grey. I’m hopeful that the paint that is on the Castle now is a sort of primer, but it could be the final look.

Here’s a look at some of the new grey paint, applied to the Castle recently. It’s unlikely that we’ll see significant progress this weekend during the cold snap, but hopefully the moat can be drained soon and we can start to see real progress on the project in the coming weeks!
