A HEAT ADVISORY COVERS WALT DISNEY WORLD THROUGH 7 PM

The National Weather Service issued the Heat Advisory for all East Central Florida counties from 11am to 7pm today, and that includes every Walt Disney World park. The window covers the busiest touring hours across Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom.

Forecasters expect high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, with heat index values climbing to 105 to 111 degrees regionwide. The Orlando area sits near a 107-degree max heat index, and the Weather Service rates this a Major (Level 3) HeatRisk, which affects anyone without adequate cooling or hydration.

STORMS BUILD OVER THE PARKS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop across the area this afternoon and evening. The Weather Service warns that lightning strikes, heavy downpours, and wind gusts up to 55 mph are all possible.

Orlando carries a 50 percent rain chance today, with the highest storm risk arriving in the late-day hours. If you are working through outdoor attractions, plan the open-air queues and walk-heavy portions of your day for the morning.

THE WEEKEND BRINGS HEAT FIRST, THEN STORMS

Friday stays hot and muggy, with highs around 93 to 95 degrees and scattered to numerous storms again. The Weather Service notes that severe storms become possible Friday, a step up from today’s forecast.

Saturday delivers slight relief from the heat, though temperatures stay above normal and storm chances climb higher. Sunday eases a little more before heat builds back up Monday with highs returning to the mid to upper 90s.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON A PARK DAY

The Weather Service recommends drinking before you feel thirsty, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, and ducking into air conditioning during the hottest part of the day. Disney’s indoor attractions, shops, and table-service restaurants all work as cooling breaks between outdoor stretches.

Know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion brings dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea, and weakness, and calls for moving to a cooler area, loosening clothing, and sipping cool water. Heat stroke brings confusion and possible loss of consciousness, and it requires calling 911 immediately.
