MuppetVision 3D Replacement Show Omitted from New Monsters Inc. Land Preview

|

Earlier today, Walt Disney Imagineering debuted a new preview display for upcoming projects at Walt Disney World. While we covered the display in an earlier article, the omission of something has been nagging at me since 9:30am. While signage for the Tropical Americas land and Piston Peak National Park Cars-themed expansion to Frontierland both mention all attractions previously announced for the respective lands, the Monstropolis signage is missing something.

UPDATE: We have learned that there are currently no changes to the previously announced theater show. The rest of our article remains unedited below, for posterity.

MuppetVision 3D Replacement Omitted from Monsters Inc. Land Preview

As seen in the photo below, the description of Monstropolis is missing a reference to the previously announced “theater show” that would be replacing MuppetVision 3D. The description mentions “shopping, dining, and the first-ever suspended roller coaster in a Disney park”. However, it does not mention the “whole new theater show” that Walt Disney World previously announced.

After years spent scaring us, monsters are finally welcoming humans into Monstropolis with an all-new themed land inspired by the beloved Monsters, Inc. film franchise. Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the land will feature shopping, dining and the first-ever suspended coaster in a Disney park. As in the film, guests will first be hoisted into the air — via a unique vertical-lift system – before zooming off on a thrilling ride through the iconic Door Vault.

Now, why is this significant? Well, I’ve been hearing rumblings that the former MuppetVision 3D theater may not be home to a “whole new theater show” when the dust settles and Monstropolis begins welcoming humans. The venue will still be used for something and won’t sit empty, but it may not be home to a show.

Additionally, concept art for the venue has changed as well. The images below are a before/current of the concept art for the Monsters Inc.-themed land. Some notable changes include a renaming of the venue from “The Monstro” to “The Glob”.

Wording on the sign also changed from “Late Night Screams”, perhaps indicating a late-night show of some sort, into something more illegible. If we had a higher resolution version of the new concept art, we might be able to get a hint as to what may be in the works.

We’re going to tag this article as a rumor. While it’s certainly not a “rumor” that the show was omitted, the speculation as to why it was omitted would fall into that rumor category. It could mean something; it could mean nothing. Only time will tell.

  1. This may be an example of the (single IP) land being bigger that what they have to say with the IP. The tighter mini-land approach of Lion King at Disney Adventure World may be a better fit for Monsters, Inc. So, they may have extra square footage they need to find a way to fill, or will be left vacant (or become vacant once the shine is off the new land).

  2. The Glob sounds like a clear play on The Globe theater. It’s a better theater name. Its famous. Shakespeare and London and stuff~
