Disney World Drops “Rafiki’s Planet Watch” Name at Animal Kingdom

Following the closure of Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom last month, Disney has quietly been removing references. Although unconfirmed by Disney, we believe that the Rafiki’s Planet Watch naming will be replaced by Conservation Station. Here’s the latest.

Disney Dropping “Rafiki’s Planet Watch” Name

Walt Disney World has updated its website to reflect a new name for the former Rafiki’s Planet Watch. The Rafiki’s Planet Watch name was a little confusing in the best of times, so let’s try to work through what has changed, and what to expect when the area reopens this Summer.

We’ll start in 1998. The area recently known as Rafiki’s Planet Watch was known as Conservation Station when Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened in April 1998. The information presented by Disney at the time invited guests to “take a trip from the ‘magic’ to the ‘reality’ of Disney’s Animal Kingdom”.

According to Disney, Conservation Station was renamed Rafiki’s Planet Watch in October 2000, taking its name from the mandrill character in Disney’s The Lion King. The addition of Rafiki was modest, but Disney likely hoped that it would increase interest in the hard-to-reach corner of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Within Rafiki’s Planet Watch were a few different areas. The main building was called Conservation Station. Within Conservation Station, there were a few different exhibits, including:

  • Veterinary Treatment Room
Get a close-up look at the place we care for the animals—and even glimpse a procedure in progress.
  • Nutrition Center
Watch experts prepare meals for the park residents.
  • Amphibian, Reptile and Invertebrate Windows
Creep over to see some tarantulas, scorpions, millipedes and snakes.
  • Science Center
Check out what our resident scientists are working on.

Also within Conservation Station was the Animation Experience, where guests could learn to draw different Disney characters.

Outdoors, there was the Affection Section petting zoo.

Now, Disney has dropped the “Rafiki’s Planet Watch” name on its website and on in-park signage. It’s likely that the area will return to its original name of Conservation Station when it reopens this Summer with an all-new Bluey experience.

While the original Rafiki’s Planet Watch name was likely to drive interest in the area, Disney won’t have any problems driving interest this Summer.

The big news is, of course, that when Conservation Station reopens, it will be the home of Bluey at Walt Disney World:

Beginning in summer 2026 at Walt Disney World Resort, you’ll be able to take a fun excursion to Conservation Station in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, where you can play and dance with Bluey and Bingo! Get the wiggles out with fun animal twists to some of your favorite games from Bluey episodes, like butterfly Keepy Uppy.

Grab the whole family and snap some pictures alongside your Blue Heeler pals to remember this one-of-a-kind adventure.
