Imagineering Files Another Permit for Mysterious Changes at the Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom

|

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed another permit for changes coming to the Haunted Mansion attraction at Magic Kingdom. A permit was filed earlier this week for construction at the iconic attraction. This week’s permit comes after another Imagineering permit was filed late last year for set installation work. Here’s the latest.

Imagineering Files Another Permit for Haunted Mansion Changes

We’ll start with this new permit, which appears to be at least tangentially related to the earlier permit. The new permit, filed by Walt Disney Imagineering yesterday, lists the scope of work as “general construction”. Normally, we find more detailed permit descriptions from Imagineering. That said, the interesting part of this permit is the contractor, listed as MLC Theming. MLC Theming has worked on a number of Walt Disney World projects and attractions, from Pandora – The World of Avatar, to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, to the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. The inclusion of MLC Theming here certainly indicates a creative endeavor.

This is now the second permit filed by Walt Disney Imagineering for an address resolving to the Haunted Mansion attraction in as many months. It’s clear that something is coming, but the question is what changes are coming to the Haunted Mansion?

If I had to guess, the changes could be related to views of the upcoming Piston Peak National Park and, eventually, Villains Land. The Haunted Mansion sits on the east side of the construction site, and it will be surrounded by new views into yet-to-be-built areas. Sightlines are the first thing that comes to mind, especially with construction walls blocking views throughout the queue.

Of particular interest is the view from the graveyard scene depicted in the photo below. While there are construction walls in place now, it is believed that show buildings for Villains Land could be visible from this part of the queue. As more and more trees are cleared from areas next to and behind the Haunted Mansion attraction, are Imagineers dreaming up a new way to keep guests immersed in the vibes of the Haunted Mansion queue?

Another explanation for the permits could be a change coming to the Bride in the attic scene. In Disneyland, the bride no longer carries an axe, but rather a candelabra. About the update, Imagineer Kim Irvine said that Disney didn’t want to have the bride as an axe murderer. The change was made due to “the sensitivities of people”.

The bride that used to be in there was an axe murderer, and in this day and age we have to be really careful about the sensitivities of people.

We were celebrating someone chopping off her husband’s heads, and it was a weird story. I know the fans — some will like it and some will say, ‘Oh, you changed something again.’ That’s our job. That’s what we’re here for.
