Aerial photos from friend of the site Bioreconstruct capture the demolition of the former Eighth Voyage of Sindbad theater in the Lost Continent section of Universal’s Islands of Adventure. A portion of the show building is now a pile of twisted steel and rubble, as Universal moves forward with clearing the land for a future development.

  • Aerial photos show the Sindbad theater in various stages of demolition
  • The show closed in 2018 after a run dating back to the park’s 1999 opening
  • Universal confirmed demolition of Lost Continent as part of “site planning for future development”
  • The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad theater is the first major structure in the land to fall
  • Universal has not announced what will replace Lost Continent

Demolition Begins on the Theater

The scale of the demolition is striking. Looking at the aerials, the Sindbad show building, once a massive enclosed theater dressed in sandy tones, is now being reduced to a jumbled pile of structural steel and debris. Excavators and demolition equipment are visible across multiple shots, still actively working to clear the site.

The facade elements, including the ornate archways and decorative domes that gave the area its Lost Continent character, remain standing in some photos, creating a contrast against the demolished show building behind them. In the closer shots, you can see the scale of the interior steel that formed the theater, now bent and collapsed inward as crews work to flatten the building.

A Show That Ran for Nearly Two Decades

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad Stunt Show was a fixture of Islands of Adventure since the park opened in 1999. The live stunt spectacular drew guests into a world of fire, water effects, and swashbuckling action for close to two decades before it closed in 2018. The theater sat dormant for years after that, a shell of a venue with the untouched set still inside.

The Poseidon’s Fury attraction, also located in Lost Continent, closed in 2023 and has similarly sat idle as Universal’s plans for the land began to take shape.

Universal’s Plans for the Area

As we reported in September 2025, Universal filed a demolition permit covering roughly 5 acres of Lost Continent, encompassing the former Sindbad theater, the former Poseidon’s Fury attraction, and the current Mythos Restaurant. Universal described the work as “part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments,” stopping short of officially announcing what comes next.

More recently, Universal confirmed that venues and experiences within Lost Continent will permanently close in phases to make way for a new themed area, including the eventual closure of Mythos Restaurant in 2027. Universal has not announced what will replace the land.

The Sindbad theater, long dormant and purpose-built for a show that ended years ago, was the obvious first choice for a structure to fall. With excavators now moving in and the footprint of the building being cleared, the pace of change at Lost Continent is accelerating.

What’s Next

While Universal has yet to officially announce what will take over the Lost Continent footprint, the scope of the demolition makes clear this is for a brand new themed land. We’ll continue to keep an eye on the work, along with any announcements Universal will make.
